If the rumors are true and the Jets are moving on from Scheifele I can see them offering PLD an 8 x 8 contract. I think they will sign Stassney just because they will need the center depth if they trade MS.

Thanks for the post Jacob, it was well thought out and a reasonable picture of what to expect.

What do you think of the Dallas Stars as a potential trade partner with the Jets for Scheifele? They need the offence, we need the defense. Scheifele fits into their window, maybe they would be interested in having Dillon back as well

If Scheifele is moved, PLD becomes the clear 1C, and will definitely get 8x8. I don't think Stastny returning is a great idea, specifically because of the toxic locker room we are hearing about. He could be a saint in the room, but regardless, it needs change.

If Klingberg is on his way out the door, they could certainly be interested in Dillon. As for a Scheifele deal, I am not so sure. Fits needs well, but Dallas isn't in a position to trade away the future, and I would expect a return to include Stankoven, Stranges (My favourite orisoect in all of hockey. Go watch his skating if you haven't before. It will wow you), and a roster piece, and I don't think Dallas is close enough to be doing that kind of deal.

A team like the Islanders, Ducks, or Red Wings come to mind when I look at the need to fill.

Great article!

There has to be at least some thought of giving Heinola and Samberg a full-time opportunity I hope. Could be that the Jets spend a little less on the D if they are ready…..they look damn close.

Gusftasson is an NHL forward full stop, I’m a little surprised there’s no report of him or his camp griping lol. Just seems so solid

And Schveck! Needs to be here, can play on any line if necessary but looks to be a 3rd liner. Although with DuBois there is some chemistry left over from juniors

Important summer for True North and the Jets

I think it’s going to be hard to sign PLD to a deal over 6 years. My guess is, he’ll be trying for a 3-4 year deal and the Jets will be pushing for 7-8 year and they will settle on 5-6 years.

Don't bet on Chevyseasonoff as Ultimate Jet likes to say, making any moves. He can still send Samberg and Heinola down to the minors without clearing waivers, so there is no need to move dmen out. As for Scheifele, no trade package will come close to replacing his offense which they need to have a chance at playoffs next year, so he will push that decision until next year.

I would much rather see Heinola, Samberg, in the lineup over Schmidt and Dillon (I think Dillon is great, just and will do better under a new coach, but the Jets didn't need to get him) and even have Chisholm and Kovacevic switching with Stanley. On paper, they are not taking the spots from the top-6 I listed, but they should.

I am still not 100% sold on Svech. I don't see many roster spots available for him to fight for, besides the 4th line who are those role players that Svech can't do as well as them. Even Appleton, I would like to see moved on, and give some youth that ice time. Nothing against them, but keeping all of these guys in the lineup over the prospects waiting, is exactly how you stay in eternal mediocrity. Without bringing anyone new in, and taking their history into consideration, the Jets can ice a good team wihtout Svechnikov, Appleton, Sanford, Stasnty and Vesalainen, and be no worse than last season

And Chisholm, and Gawanke, and Kovacevic, and... and... and...

This is what Chevy needs to be able to see. That is 5 defenseman ready to play in the NHL. Sure, maybe only 2 of them look comfortable enough to play at the beginning of the year, but he locked the team into the those 6 (Morrissey, DeMelo, Dillon, Pionk, Schmidt and kinda Stanley). The Jets wont scratch a D-man making more than $4m, which 4/6 of them are. 2 d-men gotta go, or trade your prospects. Something has to happen freesh off the 3 year extension

I actually take his extension to mean, keep following the Chevy way(not doing much) instead of trying something new.

This contract will make PLD the next big target of Jets fans. His production will never live up to this contract. PLD is not a number 1 Center. He is a 1B (with Scheifele or someone like that) or a 2A.

This I agree with. Stastny is great friends with 26. It was the main reason he signed with Winnipeg last offseason and also why he waived his NTC to come here.

Question for everyone...

If the room is divided, who is on which side ?

We know that one faction is led by Wheeler.

Who is the other faction ?

This is a great question! Perhaps there is only one faction, with everyone else in the room attempting to remain neutral. Reminds of the WWF back in the day when there was a “clique” in the locker room that many guys did not care for.

I won't save this for the Mailbag, as there is just not enough information to write about, and mailbag is not the place for pure speculation, but by all the things I have ready and seen, it's kinda the young vs. the old.

Obviously there are many exceptions, and it's not a clear line anywhere, but it sounds like all of the vets are part of the problem.

If the issues started in 2017/18 then it was players around at that time that are divided.

I think it would be more so in 2018-19. In 2017-18, the team made the conference finals. At the end of 2018-19 during the year end conference, Scheifele was visibly upset at what occurred during that season. And, the other assistant captain in Byfuglien did not even bother showing up for the year end press conference. That was the same year that Maurice spoke about “ruffled feathers’, and Wheeler was speaking about “running through a wall for Maurice”.

The crazy thing after all this was that both Chevy and Chipman decided to bring everyone back again for the 2019-20 season.

I agree that 2018/19 is when cracks started emerging visible to us fans, perhaps I am guilty of projecting the facts a little but the conflict lines must have been drawn before things broke down in 18/19.

If it is an old guys vs young guys thing then the only old guys left from that season are Wheeler and Stasny. Scheif, Lowry are in the middle, Schmidt and Dillon from outside the organization. Old vs young doesn't fit unless Scheif, Lowry, Copp are part of the 'old' crowd?

With Deboer being fired it appears that Vegas is going to go all-in for Trotz. Jets better give Trotz a blank cheque and have him tell us how much he wants and for how long.

DeBoer is Maurice's buddy, maybe the Jets will trade Scheifele and bring Maurice back with DeBoer as an assistant coach... 🤔😆🤣

James Patrick said it. Said it came from Hayes and Eakins.
