While I really like the idea of giving the Ice Hogs guys a cup of coffee early on for the sake of both the player and organization for evaluating, I wish Kalynuk gets some game time soon. They have 3 games in 4 nights starting tomorrow.

Thanks Theo - That is a strong brew blog this morning.

I'm excited for Slavin, but I am not going to expect much. Like you said, it is way too early to expect great things. He will use this experience to his advantage.

If the 189# is correct he's about 30 pounds light for 6'-3" and in the picture I saw he looks it. Not sure where the muscle is coming from when he plays against "men."

I saw Slavin play a few times with the Chicago Steel. I think he might stick around longer than you think Theo.

Plus, Slavin is one-third of my dream 4th line for the future, Slavin, Entwistle and Slaggert.

He looks like an old time Hawks player Dan Maloney. Guy was thin as a rail, tough as nails. Just read he recently passed away. Oh and this:

"Maloney is known as having had one of the hardest right-hand punches in his day, and is considered by many hockey fans to have been the greatest fighter (along with the Flyers' Dave Schultz) in NHL history. The two finally squared off in a fight in a game in Los Angeles on January 4, 1975, with Maloney considered the winner. But Maloney was more than a fighter, as he tallied 27 goals in back to back seasons (1974–75 and 1975–76). Maloney was part of the trade that sent Marcel Dionne from Detroit to the Los Angeles Kings. Schultz was traded to the Kings a year later to replace Maloney as their enforcer.

My Dad used to call Maloney “snowshoes” due to his skating ability.

Scored quite a few goals actually and was a first round draft choice for Chicago. Something made them get rid of him? They had "King Kong Korab" behind him they didn't need him as an enforcer anymore.

Wiz could probably tell us the whole story....

I'm more concerned with the 1st and 2nd lines of the future. After Debrincat, an aging Kane, who granted IMO still has a few years left, and hopefully Reichel, who's left in the system to play top 6? Maybe Dach proves me wrong and tops out higher than 3C, Hagel would be a 3rd liner on any very good team. Kubalik is not worth 4M at his current production and may not be around much longer. Too early to tell on Borgstrom.

Edit - Forgot to mention the Captain. It's obvious he's almost finished. Love the guy. Maybe he turns it around as he recovers from his illness. But he's been skating and taking the road back since the summer. How long, if ever will it take?

Back in the day skating wasn’t as important as it is today because hooking, holding and mugging were viable defensive tactics that gave a level playing field to the slower skaters. But you were right he could play a physical game, he could fight and he chipped in some goals. If I remember correctly he had a few 20 goal seasons and may have hit 30 once or twice, in an era where 20 goals was considered a good season.

Never understood why they got rid of him and Gerry Pinder.

It could well be an epic battle to see which of the Blackhawks, Cubs and Bears will be the worst Chicago sports team over the next three or four years.

Derek King on Tyler Johnson: "They're trying to figure out what's going on with him. He's not getting any closer. Hopefully we get some good news when we get back from the trip." #Blackhawks

Derek King said Calvin de Haan won't practice today due to lower back soreness, but he will make the trip. Unclear whether he'll play tomorrow against Washington. #Blackhawks

We might be seeing Kalynuk and C. Jones on the ice at the same time now (not necessarily as a pairing, but you get the point).

#18 if I recall correctly. I always liked Maloney, don’t remember who exactly they got back for him.

The organization will be going through a top down review when a new hockey ops boss is chosen which is going to take a lot of time.

Everything likely is going to go through a reboot and we won’t realize the specifics of the path forward. What we can bet on now is this is going to require a long true rebuild, and we are in hockey hell for now thanks to Bowmans final moves this off-season and the front office’s reactions to the Beach allegations.

Hasn’t done much the last two years, but then again neither has Strome. I’m okay with that trade proposal, and also okay if trade is not made. He has scored in the past and this team needs more offense, also a little faster than Strome.

Not sure why but CapFriendly has him listed at 6’0” and 161 lbs.

Maloney was the Leafs next generation version of John Ferguson and it was Roger Neilson that wanted him as their tough guy so he could match up up in the playoffs against the Flyers (Shultz, Bob Kelley) and Islanders (Gillies, Gary Howatt, Potvin).

They got him in a trade with Detroit and paid a pretty big price. He was a buddy of Sittler's from the London Knights junior team.

I think Dylan Strome modelled his skating after Maloney but dropped out of the physicality part.

If they are going to have Gusto along the blue line on the PP, i would not mind them trying out Seth Jones as the net front presence.

If they aren't going to play him there isn't really a point to having him on the roster.

Maloney may have been slow but at least a slight breeze wouldn’t knock him on his ass.

I don't follow. What's the logic there?
