Carol Schram: Hughes, Pettersson deals done; Hamonic's in limbo; Canucks fall to Flames The Vancouver Canucks' new contracts for young stars Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes are all-but-official, but the status of defenseman Travis Hamonic is still up in the air. And the bubble players in training camp didn't do much to advance their cases for jobs on the big club during a 4-1 road loss to the Calgary Flames on Friday.

The ad's between the paragraph's make it a bit annoying to read. (I know that's not your fault or problem)

Just thinking there could be a better set up for the ad's on the page.

To hockey now

I haven't really looked at the schedule this year. 4 times seems light for a division opponent this season even with another team added. Is it 2 away 2 home for the series?

Yup. Two home, two road, one in each of the last four months of the season.

In the last full season, 2018-19, the Canucks played the Flames five times but some other division opponents, like Edmonton and Arizona at first glance, just four times.

Our expectations have become totally skewed by last year!

I believe they won't: too much pride and skill on that team. But I also believe I will be very let down when they lose.

Yeah Hamonic is starting to look like the Drouin situation of last year. It is a huge pain for the club but mental illness is very real. Lately some top athletes have been stepping away for a bit to deal with this. Naomi Osaka and Simone Biles come to mind. Joanathan Drouin last year.

I have liked Burroughs in both games he played and I hope they take a longer look at him.

Canucks are over the cap but they have a guy. He will fix it.

Good report.

that seems light, but I believe 6 meetings would also make it impossible for the NHL's "every team visits every city" mandate

Burroughs seems like he could be a decent #6/#7 type of dman. He reminds me a bit of how Ryan Stanton came out of nowhere that one year and ended up being pretty solid as a depth dman.

He seems to read the game well . Good first pass and skates well. I like the player so far.

For some reason, I thought it used to be 6 or 7 times a season vs division opponent prior to covid schedule.

I had to look him up, sadly he's actually 6'1"

Unless the "smallman" is referencing something else...

Thx much Carol.

Still odd we have Petey at three years and Hughes at six years. Kinda thought that would be reversed but oh well see where it goes. Glad they are signed however.

I agree Canucks are lucky to only have to play the Flames 4 times this year.

Flames dressed 6 guys that will play in Stockton this year while Canucks dressed 8 that should be in Abby.

Yep. Defense looks worse this year than last. Can see this being Wilson's final year.

Really interesting to look at how Van's deals expire over the next 5 years. As much flak as Benning gets, once you get past this year, you can't deny that the team is set up quite well to have money coming off the books every single time a young RFA will need a raise. You can see the logic in who is signed for how long and why.

As stated in this video, it's predicated on the core being good enough to win a cup one day, which of course is an entirely different debate, but seeing it laid out like this made me understand the Petey and Hughes deals better.

I believe the whole last year of the contract -> QO thing isn’t a thing anymore. That was part of the updated CBA during the pandemic restart. QO is now basically the cap hit instead of the actual salary in the final year of the deal.

At least, I think so…

Also, LH, yes, we get it, no need to post a gif every time the governor chimes in.

Yeah, so Pettersson’s deal would be under the new format, which is what I was referencing from the blog.
