I really like the relationship between the level of play vs the cost to the AAV of the defense right now. Great bang for the buck.

Top pair (cost 13m AAV)
Provy - Ellis

Second pair (cost ? 9m AAV)
Sanheim- Ristolainen

Third Pair (cost 2.7m AAV)
Yandle- Braun

7th D (cost .75m AAV)
Morin

Playing heavy minutes in AHL
York/Zamula - Clendening

I will say this is a durable crew also. A lot has been over blown on Ellis which he will miss some games from being banged up I’m sure along with Sanheim. But the group has loads of experience along with a couple Ironmen in the line up.

Solid call ups if needed.

Quotes not working, but great points Peesinthewind. Not only is that d core durable, but Ellis, Provy and Risto all were top 20 (maybe top 15) in minutes played as a defenseman. They can eat minutes (if needed) and potentially can help shelter Yandle-Braun like Yandle was sheltered under Coach Q, Yandle was very productive and effective with this btw. Side note: that top pair combined cap would have been absurd say If we got Jones or Dougie…

@ super schennbros from last blog.

Atkinson will wear 89
Risto will wear 70
Ellis is 94
Yandle 3

Expect Thompson will wear 44
Not sure about Jones but he’ll have to switch from 31

I remember Roenick saying something like, I can’t blame Clarkie, I’d trade me for Forsberg too!

Love him or hate him, there was never a dull moment with JR

He’s the man. Met him at a Target once, shouted at him from the parking lot, he told his family to keep going and he walked over and took a picture with me.

yeah Roenick had a good attitude about the trade, i seem to recall he wanted to go to the west coast if he got traded and i'm glad we were able to set that up for him

Fantastic story. He seems like a great guy and was def a warrior. That time that he skated out for warmup at Halloween dressed as Clarke in copper all’s was prob my favourite memory. Tied with the dagger to the heart of the leafs in 04 second round. Of note. The leafs went on to miss the playoffs for the next decade and they haven’t won one playoff series since.

He really had a love for the theatrics, hell of a player too. It was unfortunate his ending to broadcast, I wonder if him and Tappin are still friends.

Yeah. I still hate how that all went down. When I read about it it didn’t sound like she had cut ties with him etc but the network wanted him gone. I think that’s still in court isn’t it? He’s suing them?

Yeah. The minute eaters are great. Although that is not Ristolainen best situation in my opinion. The Ellis contract is great. People don’t like the length but I think this guy has a tone of tread on the tires and at 6.25 per season on the AAV is terrific for what he brings. I think it is one of the best bargains for a top RHD that you will find.

Didn't go badly, either. Led the NHL in points through Thanksgiving weekend 2005 (suffered a groin pull late in a 3-point first period in Boston). That injury, which we later found out was related to his foot issues, kept recurring the rest of the season. But he dominated the playoff series against Buffalo despite needing reconstructive foot surgery.

Even the next season, with the foot still bothering him and the player being unwilling to sign a contract extension until/unless the foot issue resolved -- amid the worst season in franchise history -- he was still an impact player when able to play.

"When able to play" is the operative word. Forsberg was NOT past his prime during his Flyers stint. He was still one of the most dominant players in the NHL and, at times, perhaps even still THE best player in the league. But his body was breaking down rapidly.

Pronger, Hartnell, Roenick. They play hard on the ice and talked with character off the ice. These are the guys who kept things entertaining all season long.

It would for sure. But nah, Clarkie has no desire to do GM duties again. Chuck can do it more diplomatically.

When he was signed, I saw how deep we were down the middle with him, primeau and Zeus. Still one of my all time favorite Flyers. He looked for the hits and was dominant when he played. I felt that we were on our way to contending for a cup when he was signed but we never won a series.

Bill,

Didn't Calder have some success in the Worlds with Carter or Richards?

Imagine if Hart went to arbitration and Clarke was the Flyers presenter!!! Hart would have a nervous breakdown.

Do you know if Sanheim is looking for a long term deal? Would either party do 5 for 5 in your opinion?

Good for you. It was also a target in CT, he’s an NHL player it’s not like lebron walking through the town. He ate it up, told me I had a good eye for spotting him
