We don’t know the whole story, we are not privy to know what conversations the Pens brain trust had with other gm’s.
Also perhaps as part of the pitch to get him to come in the first place, maybe the Pens promised Jeff Carter that he would be protected and not have to worry about being selected by Seattle.

Bottom line l have no clue, but time will tell.

On top of that he's completely wrong in the scope of the blog

In his world of "Protect McCann", we lose one of either Zucker, Carter or Kapanen, since we could only then protect 2 of the 3

Which one is the 4th liner RW?

Maybe that's who he HOPES would be taken, but he implies that it's only 4th liners Blueger/ZAR/Tanev that would be exposed

And he's dead wrong (unsurprisingly)

In fact, now that McCann is gone, it is MORE LIKELY that Tanev is selected, not less, because all that's left is "4th liners and Overpaid defenseman"

So.. uh… full disclosure. I’m pretty hammered. Been day drinking. Is the headline “Pitt trades McCann for Hallander” what I think it is?

Trash trade.

We can hope it is step 1 of a larger picture but...

The team is worse today than it was yesterday and they helped Toronto.

It's not that they didn't want to lose McCann for nothing. It's likely that they want to lose another salary as well.

Think we see Blueger protected now with Zucker, Matheson and Pettersson all exposed. So either they take a significant salary or they settle for ZAR.

Yep, This

By taking McCann off the table, they protect Blueger and free up another 4-5.5 million in capspace in addition to McCann's 3 million

For all we know Zucker, Matheson and Petts were unmoveable without taking a contract of some sort back, but it opens up for the money to be free and cleared if Seattle takes one of them

If the Pens don't have long term plans for McCann on the roster all I'm saying is they got off of him a year early to free up $$ to sign a guy this offseason that THEY DO like long term on the roster

McCann is a 3rd liner, Poulin and Legare, assuming they play this year, will likely start on the 3rd line, which is where you need to open up a spot

Same goes for if they go out and get some guy with "long pants". Those guys who are top 6 are expensive, and hard to find, they will go with a lesser/cheaper option so again, that's another guy for the 3rd line

If you want/need the capspace and you have an excess 3rd liner in McCann, that's why you just move him now and be done with it

- TheGame316

I think he had more value to the team now then you did. But not even trying to argue that.

The flaw in your argument was that they need to move him before he can get 5M next year. If he's worth 5M next year, that means he had a great year this year. In which case you can chose to sign him long-term, or trade him for more than Hallander and a 7th.

I would not protect Carter and have him say if he is chosen he will retire which would absolutely be possible!

Which would be great for the Pens if he wanted to do that. But he has over 5 million reasons not to so he might not want to play along.

I'm not saying he's WORTH it

I'm saying that's what he'd get in arbitration

He gets to use similar overpaid players contracts as compatibles, so, knowing that he has no future beyond 2021 with the Penguins, Hex/Burke chose to unload him now for nothing so that can allocate the 3 million in Free Agency to a player THEY DO want to move forward with in 2021 and beyond

That's why you move him now and not "later" for more value

Free Agency starts in a week

So does anyone else think Tarasenko being made available affects Seattle taking Zucker? I don't know that Seattle is looking to bring too many higher contract players.

According to Capfriendly his salary is just $1,000,000 in 2021.

My hope is, as others have pointed out, the Hextall is trying to clear two sizable contracts (McCann and X). Would love if it is for Landeskog.

I highly doubt it. The Pens would have to make some serious moves to add him and would like create larger holes in other positions.

I could see them attempting to trade for someone like Jarnkrok and getting another UFA in the $4-$5M range.

History shows that players hang on until they literally can't get another contract or they are too injured to play

I don't see Carter hanging it up after this season

If anything, he signs a cheap 1 year extension with the Penguins and goes year to year or he chases 1 more payday in Free Agency to the highest bidder than has winning potential

I don't think Seattle touches Tarasenko

If they want him they wait till after the draft and make St.Louis retain some $$ in a trade

Unless the Blues are ponying up the 1st and a 3rd

Well, can't the Pens pick up a UFA that is close to McCann? I like the guy but he's very replaceable.

Yeah, I know it’s a pipe dream. But if Zucker and McCann are off the books; it’s at least feasible. But your thoughts are more likely.

I won’t be mad if they add two of Coleman/Tatar/Jarnkrok
