Jarry is 26 and just had a good season, he didn’t steal any games for them in the post season but the Pens have no answer for the Islanders as coached by Sullivan. If they would make a big trade for flower it makes sense. He’s a guy that can steal you entire series and if they never make a good run again it would just be nice to have the boys back together. Plus Burke has also stated on live radio that they aren’t searching for a goalie. Give it up.

I would argue that Jarry did not have a good season. Among goalies who played at least 10 games he was 30th in save% with .909 and 35th in gaa with 2.75. The Pens often had to score 4+ goals a night to win. He is going to have to do better than this and the team defense is going to have to do better at supporting him if they are going to go far in the playoffs. Having to score 4+ goals a game in the playoffs on a regular basis is not a recipe for success.

Could he have a bounce-back season? Certainly. I am not a strong advocate for trading him, largely because there isn't a good replacement.

Also, the Pens should have won games 1 and 5 against the Isles, especially 5. Jarry lost that one on his own.

Well the aim in trading Jake for Gibson would be to have less goals given up at the expense of scoring less goals. Jake has been ineffective in the playoffs in 2019, 2020, and 2021. He has I think 6 points in 14 games. Sooner or later the excuses need to stop. He isnt a kid anymore and he has had really good playoffs in 2017 and 2018.

If you get offered a swap of Gibson for Jake... you take that every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

And I would disagree that it's harder to find a scoring winger than a good goalie. There are plenty of UFAs this summer that are solid wingers. Are they great goal scorers like Jake? Of course not, but I'd happily trade Jake's 35 goals a season for a guy scoring 20 goals plus elite goaltending.

I think its all a moot point anyway, there's no indication that Gibson is even being shopped.

I think the John Gibson trade talk as it pertains to the Penguins gets fueled by the zip code he was born in.

Sort of, but that understates the degree of familiarity. Everyone heard of him as one of that terrific local cohort including Saad, Trocheck, and Miller. Anyone in hockey circles coached or played with or against one or more of them, maybe played against a brother, and so forth. Most of us are no more than one or two degrees of separation from most of those guys. Often by multiple paths.

Gibson had reputation as man among boys going back to Pee Wee at least and was highly regarded as an elite prospect and the best of that elite cohort. Whatever he is today, people remember that can't miss kid who didn't miss.

This narrative of JG all of sudden being no bueno is ignorant.

Here’s the reality- he’s a top 5 goalie @ worst who has been completely frustrated by playing behind what can generously be called an ECHL D the last 3 yrs - injuries to Manson & Hampus didn’t help…

He just kind of checked out as seasons went on… can’t blame him for that.

The guy just didn’t forget how to stop the puck….

I'd have to disagree on them not being good trade partners. They have done a ton of trades over the years (under JR of course) and the Pens have plenty of options as to what we could send their way.

I would not do Jake in a straight up deal for Gibson, but mostly because we need to get rid of Jarry if we are bringing him in. I also think there are different pieces either team could be enticed by.

I really like Terry and I do think Manson would be a great fit on the Pens. There might be a way to work Rackell into a trade if Jake is going the other way too.

I think Anaheim would be interested in a Marino for Manson swap as part of a bigger trade as it would help their protection scheme and help them get younger and cost controlled.

All that said, ideally you don't have to trade Jake to get Gibson.

No, but he could be breaking down. But the NHL, let alone playing behind an ECHL D, team puts a lot of wear and tear on the body. The sample size this season was small, but the past two is close to 2600 shots, and he's about 1.5 SD below his career average over that period. He could bounce back, but how lucky do you feel?

Once again, somehow you people think trading for Fleury makes zero sense.
HAVE YOU SEEN HIM PLAY IN THE POSTSEASON?????
The reason we want to move on from Jarry is EXACTLY why you DONT trade for Fleury! Flower might steal a game or even a series, but HE GIVES AWAY games and series just as readily. In fact, there are many more examples of Flower COSTING his team a series rather than stealing one... Please take your own advice and GIVE IT UP!

This was actually an interesting blog. I hadn't realized Gibson's numbers were so mediocre.

Gibson / Jake aside... I agree with the premise of not trading premium assets for goaltenders. I think the best model is the a 1A and a 1B that don't cost much to acquire and dont cost much in cap space. Jarry and a Thomas-Greiss-type is good enough for me.

Up until two years ago Gibson's numbers were really, really good. Since then he and Bobrovrsky, Lundqvist, Holtby, and Murray have all had downturns. Bob and Hank are farther along the age curve, but Holtby's stats actually started to decline in his age 28 season. As much as I like Gibson, I'd be concerned about placing a large bet on him being an upgrade.

Up until 2 years ago Gibson had great numbers. Up until 3 years ago Anaheim was a playoff team who drafted and developed pretty decent defenceman. Anaheim finished 1st in their division for like 5 consecutive years when Gibson was taking over as a starter, a 2nd place, then they were terrible. I’m sure there is no correlation between Anaheim absolutely sucking and Gibson’s numbers going down.

I wouldn’t expect him, or any goalie, to play at an elite level in pittsburgh with their defence and style of play.

Que feds with a stat that proves otherwise.

Something I noticed the last two cups that I'm glad they changed is allowing the players to really skate around with the cup. The last two years they let them skate a few feet then hand it off really fast.

I miss the days when the entire team would circle the rink in a group and hand it off 1 guy to the next

Huh? I was at the game, watching the ceremony, they all skated around the rink and then hand it to the next guy lol granted I've had a few bourbons, but from my seat, they all skated around both ends of the rink, except the plugs who never played toward the end of the ceremony lol

Cocaine is a hell of a drug. Calling out poop when you don’t have to play anyone anymore. Top notch guy. Should have played football. He’s probably just mad no one in Tampa will remember they won in 2 days.
