Sam Ventura is leaving the Penguins to go to Buffalo... cant blame the guy and surprised it didnt happen a while ago... its been pretty obvious since Rutherford that no one was listening to this guy.

Maybe he’s another Chayka. Stat nerd that isn’t that good at his job

It’s entirely possible he’s recommending things that would have been disastrous and has lost credibility

I mean, we saw a stat nerd have complete authority over a team that spent to the cap. How did that turn out?

Well he is known as one of the best in analytics and a lot of GMJR's moves were not with analytics in mind, in fact you could say most of his moves, especially after 2016, were anti-analytics haha...so I dont think what you've said here is the case.

So, hang on to him and if the deadline comes and he's doing amazing, then what? That's probably the best thing to happen right?
If not, grab a tender at the deadline?

Might not be the best thing if Jarry can't handle the playoffs again.

I've never been a believer in Jarry so you won't convince me to return with the same goal-tending. It's possible he could succeed, I'm just not willing to gamble another post season on him without at least a strong 1B.

Interesting though that Ventura left under the new regime and not Rutherford.

It’s never a good thing when someone leaves your org to go to Buffalo. Especially someone who was always spoken of so highly. Maybe this is a sign of an impending overpaid truculent 3rd pair Dmen. Sam doesn’t want to be here for round 4.

That's a good point and perhaps true. Its also possible Sam could of been offered more money or gone there for personal reasons...or perhaps Hex/Burke have their own team or other people in mind for this stuff. All pure speculation of course....I just hope yours is wrong haha

Me too. Hextall’s one move with carter seemed pretty savvy and spot on for what the team needed so it wouldn’t seem like he is an anti analytic.

Could just be it was a better job. Difficult to tell without seeing the corporate structures of both FO's. This probably isn't as dramatic as people want it to be.

Honest question. Do we know that he was good at his job, or is it just people liked is site and assumed he was doing a good job?

Interested to see when/if they make another hire for analytics. Not ideal to lose your guy right before the off-season moves really start.

Should be noted that the Penguins hired Katerina Wu last season, so I wouldn’t necessarily be worried that the organization is throwing analytics out the window.

All the best to Sam with Buffalo.

I’ve read he was good from comments on people within Pitt. Doesn’t mean he actually was any good. JR obviously just didn’t care that much.

He’s incredibly well regarded within the Sloan crowd. He’s a top individual talent, but clearly he had no demonstrable positive impact with the Penguins. No idea if that’s because he’s not good enough at the people skills aspect of the job to be successful like Chayka, or if Rutherford truly just could not give less of a poop about analytics. Either are quite possible.

Had fun doing the "Which moment would've had the biggest impact in the Crosby/Malkin era had it happened" so I decided to do another one before OT started.

Which series loss would've had the biggest impact had it happened?

2009 - Penguins lose to the Capitals (Round 2)
2013 - Penguins lose to the Islanders (Round 1)
2016 - Penguins lose to Rangers (Round 1)
2017 - Penguins lose to the Capitals (Round 2)

For me, it's 2013. That team was supposed to win the Cup given the additions of Morrow, Iginla, and Murray (lol). Not to mention the team was already in hot water for that embarrassing series versus the Flyers in 2012. Had we lost that series versus the Islanders, I think heads would've rolled big time.

Second would be the Rangers beating us in 2016. That would've been the third year in a row we lost to the Rangers.

Yea 2013 we should have won. Don't forget Jokinen and Vokoun. All those guys were added to Crosby, Malkin, Neal, Kunitz, Dupuis, Letang, Orpik, Martin, Niskanen, Fleury and I guess you throw Sutter in there haha.

I'll go 2009. The Bylsma/Shero era either goes by much quicker or at least the heat is turned up sooner.

Yeah, I honestly have no clue who she is, but it seems like they at least have someone with some expertise.

I’m more curious how many teams, if any, are successful as a result of using analytics to construct their team.

So this season coming they fire Sully mid way, beat the Isles on the 3rd attempt and take home Lord Stanley one last time in this era...we have the whole league right where we want them, really.
