Alex has the ability to do what Tom Brady did for years in NE: take less money because he's already uber rich, thus allowing his team to bring in more talent. No reason the Caps can't make another Cup run with AO if he does the right thing by the Caps.

Ovechkin will not break Gretzky's record and I believe Ovi will be 37 by the time the next season starts, We also witnessed a very pedestrian Ovechkin In the last Caps playoff campaign, Ovi Is aging and physically breaking down and when you add that to all of the money that the league lost and all 31 teams and the fact that Washington won't come close to a cup again with this aging group It makes sense to offer the future HOFer 1 year at 3 million and anything more than that Is flushing money down the toilet.

The Caps can't afford that contract unless they plan on unloading a good size contract to the Kraken or via trade. CapFrieSndly gives them a current $9.3mm cap space and you still have to sign Samsonov this year and Vanacek next...Kempny comes back next year so Chara is gone as well..a minor deal to be sure ..

I really hope he breaks Gretzky's record. Ovi is the best goal scorer in history imo.

2 years at 7.5 would probably be pretty good imo

Yeah he did'nt slowed down one bit, only played in the toughest division in the league.
He also was the caps best forward in the playoff, at least in the top six and coming back from injury nonetheless.

Pretty sure he gets over 12 and deserve even more. Don't know if you remember the prior Ovie but there was at least 5000 empty seats every game, he filled out those seats, it's been sold out every game since how long? Caps were one of the least profitable team and lower valued team in the league before Ovie. Now they are what sixth, seventh according the Forbes. That's a few 100 millions maybe over a billion over 16 years. Washington reverse jerseys were the best seller this spring, sold out under an hour, does that happen whitout Ovechkin?

That's what I saw too. The guy clearly has some in the tank still. I expect he'll pass Gretzky.

Totally true. Used to go down for Flyers/Caps games because it was an easy and cheap ticket back in the Lindros/LeClair era. Since Ovie came, the Caps cut themselves a decent sized fan base who would attend.

I live down there now, and although the “Football Team” still runs the place, the Caps fans will fill that arena, and the #1 reason is Ovie.

I don’t think he’ll give them too much of a discount. He knows his worth.

I’ll go 4/44. Maybe even 4/46.

I know that’ll cost them someone. Appears Oshie will be a victim, although rumors of a Kuzy trade have been swirling a little.

4 year at 10.5.... guess if that happens Ovi has no interest in winning prior to hanging them up...this team is in decline and each year gets worse, not to mention the selfish players. Kuznetsov comes to mind who puts himself before the team...would have been a good choice to retain the coach who led the team but that ship sailed and then the gm pays ransom for Mantha giving up what was skilled winger just wanting ice which apparently the Caps thought he didn't deserve and preferred to give to a big, lazy body in Mantha... good luck with that floater.... this team has very real problems and throwing a ton of cash, even to Ovi, at this stage seems foolish... team friendly deal aimed to bring new personnel to the team or continue the decline into obscurity.....

Couldn't have said it better. I think the window is pretty much closed. Mantha is a big disappointment indeed...

Never understood the want for Mantha... I get hes a big guy and when he's committed to playing hard he produces.. I also think, even playing on a putrid Red Wings squad he showed lack of desire and any accountability when he disappeared... maybe Yzerman really sold folks on how much he meant to the future and his size and what not... seems several gms had interest, never fails to amaze, takes only one gm to think they can get the most from a guy with serious questions surrounding that players career... horrible deal for Washington

I think the estimation of 4 years +$10M is pretty fair. He is negotiating his own deal, so maybe he takes a bit less. He doesnt strike me as a take one for the team guy. He should be just saying screw it and doing a 4 year $7.5M AAV but it I just dont see that happening.

Either way, I think it will be exciting to see him chase Gretzky's record. He has been incredibly lucky to be so healthy throughout his career, if he stays healthy he has a legit chance at it.

Hell, even if he slows down, his shot is still insane. He could play into his early 40's as a powerplay specialist and pick up 20 goals per season to get there. Ovi is an incredibly hard worker and I expect he wants that record BADLY. I don't think he will stop playing until he gets it.

You guys need to give him a full season before giving up on him...

Don't get me wrong, it was a massive overpay for him but he is a pretty solid, still youngish power forward. When you are surrounded by losers for so long, you start to become one. Give him a full season with an NHL hockey team and I think he will start looking a lot better.

If not, trade him to the Pens, we could use him!

I wouldn't say he was surrounded by losers... Larkin plays his a55 off, as does Bertuzzi... too bad Bertuzzi was injured, but those were Manthas linemates and both are better players than him... speaking of Bertuzzi, he'd be perfect for your Pens, and had he not been injured a better deadline pickup than Mantha, kid has a motor and doesn't quit....and players are drafted onto rebuilding teams and traded to crap teams, it happens.. how do they respond, play or float and feel entitled like Mantha...

What a joke this is, get a brain. You offer ovechkin 3 million and he signs for 8 or 9 elsewhere.

It wouldn't surprise me at all to see him sign a 4 year extension (to match Backstrom and shoot for the record), and take a slight haircut in doing so as well, to help the team still stay competitive. Maybe the same 9.2 AAV as Backstrom, maybe less even. Could also add a year or two onto that at receding actual $ through the contact length. Not sure what they are still allowed to get away with nowadays (with cap recapture penalties and stuff).

Isn't Kuzy basically out the door? I think he ends up on the Kraken.

While I suspect the Caps will have lots of room because I think they are going to get rid of Kuzy.

For Ovi, I'd love to see him be the first and only player to reach 900 goals as well as win another cup or two.

However, I think if Ovi was smart (Which I think he is), and If he's going to get there. he's going to need a team around him that can help. Which means. If he takes a bit of a pay cut , that leaves much more room for the Caps to get a bit younger, build up their bottom end and support for Ovi... Thus giving him the best chance to get it done.

My bet is that he gets something more along the lines of 4 years at $10 Million. However, He's already loaded so, it would show a great deal of leadership as well as the want to win on his part if he took a something like a 4 year deal at $5-$6 Million per year (No I don't think that'll happen). But it would be smart on his part to do that in order to ice a team that will help him reach the 900 goal milestone as well as win another cup or two.

I think he takes less. You missed a key variable IMO, Ovi acts as his own agent. He has no agent getting a cut off of him. He’ll give the caps a discount. 4 x 7.5.
