The Muzzin effect
- Steven_Seagull

So Muzzin isnt a top pairing but he is so good that he makes crap players into top 4 D? I am very confused with this double standard.

It's going to be interesting to see what Dubas & Co. do.

One option is to go with protecting 4F, 4D, 1 goalie:

Tavares
Marner
Nylander
Matthews

Muzzin
Brodie
Rielly
Holl

Campbell

I'm wondering if Seattle will be interested in Kerfoot. He's kinda a guy that doesn't really check any one box, especially for an expansion club.

He only has two years left before being UFA.

He's not underpaid or overpaid.

He's not really "a strong veteran presence in the room who the kids can learn from."

He's not really top 2 line material.

Dermott may be more tempting.

- Atomic Wedgie

The reasoning they will want Kerfoot is because there are no C's available...seriosuly check it out. Kerfoot would be the 1C and it wouldn't be close.

Its a nice sell to the fans as well being a BC boy.

His fancy stats numbers don't pass the sniff test for me. There's something else going on there.
- BINGO!

I am very happy with what he brings for 2M.

I believe they can win with having 4 talented core players being paid as such.

The freak JT injury sucked that's for sure.

And the narrative that the core 4 is being paid too much and can't afford depth, D or goaltending was a false narrative against the Habs.

Funny enough the best production came from outside the 40M core besides Willys 7M cap hit.

- Santo_44

The Core 4 hasn't proven that they have what it takes to win a playoff round. Buckle up for disappointment because we're about to run the scenario again in 21/22.

Kerfoot and Spezza both had a pretty great series but beyond that, outside the Core 4 was largely a wasteland. (Galchenyuk had one big game where he scored 3 pts)

Hyman, the type of player some are alluding to as the type of support piece(s) this team needs, was invisible all playoff. Why? Probably because his production largely relies on his linemates producing themselves. If the Leafs do try to add some pieces to the top 6, they better understand that those pieces will be dependent on the Core 4 actually showing up.

I don't think Dermott is an option for Seattle.... there's bound to be a player who's at least gonna be good enough to be a regular in the NHL.

Toronto will basically choose who they want to keep between Kerfoot or Holl.

I think it's more of a Justin Faulk/Jeff Skinner type deal.

Two guys that shoot a ton from everywhere, making their possession numbers look great, but they don't actually get much done most of the time.

Not saying Holl is the same deal, but there seems to be something like that inflating his on-ice impacts because when you watch him those numbers don't add up.

I think it was pretty obvious Hyman was injured...Or he just didn't bother to care to play like himself..I'll take the first one.

Overall I liked the play of everyone outside the top 4 core. If Matthews, Marner and JT score and produce at least close to themselves then they advance and we are talking about how fantastic the players were surrounding the top 4.

That's going to be a wild 2 weeks for NHL GMs.

If you're paying 40M to 4 guys they need to get the job done and shouldn't have to rely on additional support.

None of the teams left or who even made it to the 2nd round have sunk this much money into so few players.

Something to ponder.

- mjones242

People keep pointing this out each year.
Doesnt seem to matter to Dubas and others.
to clarify, its so much money invested into 4 forwards....not even spread around different positions.

I always wonder how much sleep those guys get between the draft and FA.

I bet some barely sleep, don't want to miss an opportunity in trade and signing talks.

Me too. For the first time in decades they were good enough to win. Unless they were supposed to score all the goals too.
- shack67

Baby wrister from top of circle can’t go in during a game 7, talk about deflating.

Game 5 he was also shaky.

Price let in zero softies.

I’d run with him but I think we need another goalie also. Bad groin or whatever it is and a little bit fragile mentally.

Leafs Nation has a very odd habit of worshiping guys with limited talent, because they "work harder than anyone."

Hyman is a nice player.

I wouldn't give him a penny over $3.5M. Hell, even that is crazy.

And he turned 29 on Wednesday. WTF is this talk of a six year contract?

Are you franking kidding me?

From what I understand, the NHL has said they are targeting October 12th, but nothing is official.

If anyone has better info, please feel free to correct me.

Last 3 seasons

Nylander 173gp - 55g 73a

Hyman 165 gp- 57g 54a

He should get 4.5 - 5m I would think, 4 years would be a good # even though we could give him more as I’m sure he’ll be on LTIR before his contract ends.

But he can walk and we could sign another good player, so I’m good with that too.

Let Hyman go
Trade Rielly
Trade Nylander

Sign Hamilton

I keep hearing this "if" thrown around each year about the Core 4. Would be fun not to have to speculate on how this team would do if the Core 4 would actually (frank)ing produce.

But sure, let's just throw more resources into the top 6 to see if that will get those snakebitten 4 all going at the same time.

And for the record, I'm not sure if "fantastic" is the word I would use to describe those outside of Kerfoot and Spezza. But, okay...

1st game: 2 goals against.

2nd game: 1 goal against

3rd game: 1 goal against

4th game: shutout

5th game: 4 goals against (in OT)

6th game: 3 goals against (in OT)

7th game: 3 goals against (1 was EN)

I'm still puzzled by the narrative that our defence and goalie should have been better.

- Atomic Wedgie

Ya our D wasnt the problem
Our goalie didnt steal any elimination games. He wasnt the reason we lost....but he didnt outperform the other goalie either. Overall, he doesnt shoulder any blame imo.
