Matthews nomination for the Hart trophy seems a bit contrived.

Patrick Kane would seem a more deserving candidate.

More goals than any oter defenseman in the league over the past 4 years
- BINGO!

But he won’t help with secondary scoring somehow.

It should’ve been the same nominees as the Ted Lindsay. Matthews, McDavid, and Crosby

Ha!

I made one innocuous comment that wasn't even criticizing the team, and almost everyone in that thread attacked me - many making it personal. Was like a jail-break and totally unexpected. They are so defensive in that thread a hint of something they don't agree with pushes them over the top. The way they reacted you'd think I'd killed one of their puppies or something.

It's was just weird.

Montreal fans are passionate.

To my knowledge - they are the only fans who have called the police en mass to investigate a hit in an NHL game.

‘Now’ is just yesterday’s tomorrow, and tomorrow’s yesterday.

And the Leafs still suck no matter how you look at it!

- Steven_Seagull

The team was great except for spending ~2.5-3 too much on 16/34/88 and the 11M Snakes extravaganza

What did Kane help his team accomplish? They missed the playoffs by 9 points.

Holl in the top-4

Yup.

Muzzin-Hamilton
Sandin-Brodie

I like the look of that even though Sandin is still green.

When we couldn’t score our way out of that same division, maybe going after the biggest fish in the UFA market for a defenceman isn’t the best idea. After all the crying about all our money being tied up in four guys we’re going big game hunting? To fix a problem that doesn’t exist?

We have bigger problems up front. We need secondary scoring. We need to change the way our offence plays and that means using the money we can dig up to find new forwards, not Museum Man.

- Canada Cup

A big issue with our scoring has to do with the insanely terrible power play this team seems committed to running.

Rielly doesn't have a big shot and is much more effective on a rush and less on set plays. Hamilton has a great shot and is a far better PP QB.

Also, Justin Holl is not a legit Top 4 guy and I think we should stop pretending that he is. Brodie can play on the 2nd pair if Hamilton is signed.

If you really think that our offence and secondary scoring is a big problem than moving out a massive contract like Marner's is a natural way to go about fixing that. Sure, you don't replace his 90+ points a season with one player but his salary would go a long way to acquiring 2 legit Top 6 forwards that provide balance across 2 lines.

If Marner is not going anywhere than you run with Robertson in your Top 6 and hope he can keep up. You also run with Sandin and Liljegren as cheap D-men (which is probably happening regardless).

I'd also recommend (as I mentioned above somewhere) moving Marner off of PP1 and replacing him with Nylander, who has an elite shot (and scores in front of the net!).

Problem is if the Leafs are going to upgrade from Rielly to Hamilton, they'll have to go cheap at 3C. Kerfoot could be taken by Seattle. So you use that 3.5 mil on top of Rielly's 5 mil (assuming you trade him for a combo of picks and prospects) to pay for Hamilton. He'll want and likely get Petro money.

Do you really want Giraffe as your 3C? If you replace Kerfoot with a UFA (let's say Granlund) then how are you fitting him in after you've signed Museum Man? Leafs still need a goalie. If Dubas stays married to his Big 4 and upgrades from Rielly to Dougie then it makes it almost impossible to upgrade the rest of the depth spots.

Hyman is gone and could be replaced by Robertson which helps the math quite a bit... if he can prove he's a legit NHLer.

I forgot about Hyman. I still think he'll re-sign with Toronto after expansion Draft protection lists are submitted.

Indeed. McPhee took more than a few GM's to the cleaners. Pens couldn't wait to dump MAF and now they want him back. 🤣

He’s good in his role. But man, can he finish at least 1/10th of his breakaways?

Hurricane Helm did everything but score. His speed scared teams when he first came up. Great penalty killer. But he couldn't score to save his life despite getting so many scoring chances because of his speed. Like Mikheyev he was all hustle and no reward.
