I keep saying Risto, Sam, and Ullmark. A trade or extension on any of them will give us some clue where they are going. Deadline was an opportunity, but certainly not surprised to see them just continue to punt on anything they can.

I think the flat salary cap made it extremely difficult to swap players. Also, don't forget about the expansion draft. Much easier to acquire a rental that you don't have to protect.

It was well known they were working on extending Ullmark.

For Ristolainen, trading him with his cap hit was no easy feat during the season.

For Reinhart, hockey trades like he would be involved in almost always happen in the offseason.

Sure, but you guys are asking what would have sent a clear message on where they are going. A Sam trade or long term extension would have sent a pretty strong signal.

We've seen JB wait too long to make decisions. KA's in that same mode so far. Hopefully it goes better for him.

I only disagree that he waited too long in terms of not either extending or trading Sam by the deadline.

They were planning on trading him if Hall worked out, but that kind of hockey trade is most frequently done in the offseason. I never would've expected Reinhart to be traded by the deadline.

Sadly, the Sabres are making day to day decisions. No forethought.

This is all lining up for a new hockey ops/ high management team to come in and make these decisions on 55, 23, ullmark, 9 , McCabe.

Just wondering if its our new associate gm , with the clean slate ahead?

Gotta think Sam's gonna be traded with a soon to be contract extension? Off season move for sure.

Feel like this conversation keeps shifting on something we agree on.

I love how so many on here act like prospects are a sure thing. The olds of Byfield, turcotte or Kaliyev being as good as eichel are not high.

Yeah we're talking more of risk they are getting a guy developed to what they hope he will be in 5 years

And he would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for that pesky losing streak
- jcragcrumple

I think Botterill’s two biggest mistakes are Krueger and Housley.

It took an assistant coach and injuries to move our second best player to center where he was drafted.

That might be issue number 1. If we know that, odds are Sam did too, which probably is part of the reason he’s gone

I think it was about whether it was reported that Vegas and another team was interested.

All those guys aren’t elite like Eichel is.

And I like some of those players too. Just not 1C elite talent

Yes, one of the most prominent rumor sites on Twitter posted that the Wild are heavily in on Eichel and Vegas wants to be but has to figure out how the cap would work (think Sabres taking back the duo of Fleury and Smith as part of the deal) and if they have the assets the Sabres would want.

Gotcha. Wasn’t doubting you just wondered where you heard it from since it seemed like you were sure.

Does that lineup even get them to the cap floor?

Without goaltending, it's roughly a $44M cap hit with the floor being $60M-$61M.
