What I find funny is that it's 100% legal to smoke dope in a park, as long as you are not near the playground.

But drink a Bud Lite?

Nope, not allowed.

- Atomic Wedgie

Shows you much I know, I would have thought it was illegal to smoke pot there.

You would think a law against public intoxication would be enough. Nope, we must prohibit people from drinking in public spaces.

Temperance movement bullpoop still woven into the fabric of North American laws long after Prohibition was repealed.

- mjones242

It would be interesting to ask cops what they think. My guess is that if they want it controlled it has little to do with their commitment to temperance. I lived across from Christie Pits for a while and just behind the Brunswick House at a different time. The public intoxication laws really weren’t cutting it at 2:00 in the morning pretty much every summer night.

Something short of full drinking in all public places please.

JC I'm old!!!
I remember his son Andrew and some friends skipped class and went to hang at the Salming house. Borje was supposed to be at practice but came home. Andrew locked his bedroom door and you'd swear the house was going to collapse once Borje saw our shoes at the door. His dad came to the bedroom door, was losing it so bad that all of us, girls included, without hesitation jumped out a 2nd story window and ran back to school shoeless Still to this day, he is one of the scariest dudes I ever met

Waiting for new tires to be installed. If any of you need new rubber, price increases are coming in June.
In my business, resins are going through the roof. One vendor increased 40% on finished goods.
Another just now, 7%.
Freight on Ocean Containers doubling in price.
Buy now, or save your money.

In Ginza, Tokyo I bought alcohol from a vending machine on a street corner while standing beside a cop (with whom I asked directions from moments later).

I've had beer and wine on the lawn next to the Eiffel Tower.

etc. etc.

In North America? Nope, we need strict alcohol laws because Nanny State dictates it because the people here are all one drink away from going Mad Max.

Look, I don't completely mind having hours where bars must close (though I still think it's largely Nanny State bs) but allowing people to drink in parks or walk down the street with, God forbid, a Miller Lite in hand is patently absurd.

Why is North America this uptight about alcohol? I dunno, ask the Puritan (frank)s who settled these lands I guess and the following generations who created the temperance movements and had their day with Prohibition laws.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm libertarian for drinks!

But what do I know? 🤷 *checks misc beer into his Untappd app proving that he's a pretentious drunk*

its the legacy of "control" typcially historically driven through religious dogma over the centuries.

I remember laughing my ass off when my neighbor came by to introduce himself when I moved into my then new home... I was sitting on my front step with a beer... he chuckled while telling me to "watch out for the neighborhood police"... I guess the forefathers of the "Karens"..

Lol, those courageous Japanese and French and Italians and others selling over priced beer and wine from vending machines to tourists in heavily policed tourist sections of their cities.

Every good gang movie needs a stop at the vending machine to stock up.

I have no problem with finding ways to allow people to enjoy drinking in public places. But to believe that there is no room between a Nanny State/Temperance approach to alcohol and being a Libertarian ignores the reality of alcohol and crime.

What reality might that be?
That law abiding citizens who drink commit crimes?
What about the reality of guns and crime?
What about the reality of cars and crime?

Interesting line from City of Toronto press release (bold is mine):

https://www.toronto.ca/ne...ring-and-into-the-summer/

The City will also continue to respond and triage complaints but reminds residents that the City’s enforcement staff are not first responders. The City continues to give priority to events that pose the greatest risk to health, such as large gatherings or parties. In many cases, bylaw enforcement officers that observe infractions in parks will work to disperse the crowd as the safest and quickest way to protect public health. Bylaw enforcement officers are also focused on stopping people from bringing large amounts of alcohol into public places. Only 69 tickets were issued for alcohol across the City’s 1,500 parks last year. Individuals consuming an alcoholic beverage in a park with their household are not a priority for enforcement.

Did you ever go to Shakespeare in the park. It was pretty common to bring bottle of wine and a blanket. I never saw anyone arrested and I don't think it was formally licensed.

I'm going to guess you've never been to Japan? There are vending machines littered everywhere in the country and they aren't there to expressly serve tourists "over-priced" beer. The Ginza scenario happened on an oddball intersection that my buddy and I stumbled upon and we had no idea where we had wandered -- hence, the interaction with the police officer who kindly directed us back to whence we came (and seemed somewhat impressed with our broken Nihongo!).

For the record, we did not partake in any of the used underwear vending machines (probably because we couldn't find any... not that we were looking).

As per France, I was shocked at the incredibly cheap wine (do they have vending machines there selling alcohol?) -- doubly so when we ate at a restaurant on the Champs-Élysées. Our attempts at broken Français was mocked severely by the server but we like to think it was all in good humour (doubtful, but it was fun nonetheless).

I can't speak for Italia but I plan on going there soon as I'm married to an Italian and I've been told I must go (or else?). Suffice it to say, I will report back to you on the state of the likely rampant hooliganism that must have the country in a constant state of drunken anarchy.

How other countries have managed to survive with such a laissez faire attitude towards alcohol is just shocking. Shocking I tell you!

Also, just to clarify: small l libertarian not big L (and not in all respects, thank you). There's a difference.
