Goalie is likely the most important position for an expansion team

zero chance he's protected.

Has Dorion been replaced as GM?
If not, there is a 50%-50% chance that Matt Murray will be protected for the entry draft.

I'd protect every one of those players before Watson, personally.
I don't think Brown or Abromov are even guaranteed to make the NHL, but their potential is far far greater.

I'd say Tkachuk, Batherson, White, Paul, and C. Brown are the only locks in terms of forwards. If you're 100% gung-ho on the youth movement, then you probably add L. Brown and Abramov and call it a day. It would leave Dadonov, Tierney, and Watson exposed, but those are all acceptable losses... especially if there's a realistic option to bring Dzingel back as a UFA. Given the recent 'beat-em in the alleys' talk out of the Rangers, it might also be worth seeing if they would offer up something unusually valuable in exchange for Watson... or even just give the Senators back their 4th round pick from the original Namestnikov trade.

Great to see Mads Sogaard have a strong start to his AHL career, going 2-0-0 with a 2.00GAA and 0.930sv%. Despite being 6'7, 200lbs, it sounds like Trent Mann was surprised by his mobility, his relatively calm demeanor, and how well he could handle puck. All good signs for a goaltender who could very well emerge as the future #1.

It's also interesting to see how well Gustavsson has been playing at the NHL level. This is part of why it's hard to effectively assess goaltenders, because their play can be so different when the D-men in front of them are doing a better job of positioning, clearing rebounds, not allowing second chances, etc. It's not unlike how different Murray looked early in the season vs. later season when the team added a lot more speed and puck-handling ability to their blue line.

Right now I have the Sens protecting 7-3-1. Can we all agree upon that? It makes sense and is probable, barring a deal for a top 2 RD.

So...using 7-3-1 who do the Sens protect?

Goalie - ABM (Anyone But Murray)

Defense - Chabot, Zaitsev, Mete (if they don't protect Mete, Seattle definitely picks him IMO)

Forward - Tkachuk, Batherson, C. Brown, White, Paul (these are no brainers). I'd say Dadonov, because he becomes a trade assest in half a year. Then you can choose from Tierney, Watson, Logan Brown or Abramov.

Sens might not protect Tierney in order to tempt Seattle to take him. Same with Logan Brown.

Regardless of who you think they will protect or who Seattle will take, the Sens have set themselves up pretty good. And, beyond the goalies, won't loose anyone that will hurt them.

This is an interesting discussion, but to be fair I don't think Seattle is going to be jumping for joy no matter who they get off the sens roster. I'm not saying the sens don't have a good core going, they do, but all of those guys will be protected. Losing a daccord or gus isn't going to set the franchise back at all.

I don't think the Sens are at risk of losing much through the expansion draft.

Seattle will drive the process. But the Sens should be able to take advantage of the process as well. There are going to be multiple teams desperate to move salary. The flat cap will make it very difficult for some teams to resign valuable RFA and UFA assets. They will need to move contracts. Ottawa has the space and should be a player in that process.

Sokolov is an interesting prospect the more time goes on.

I do find it interesting that he wasn't taken at all in two drafts, and then was taken in the second round. Quite the improvement in that final year.
