Coots, G, JVR, Braun are all respected but more lead by example. When they do talk, people listen. Dunno if they follow, but they listen, lol.
Jake and Laughts are supposedly the vocal ones now. Simmer was supposedly super vocal in the room, calling people out, threatening violence, etc. They could probably use another guy like that in the mix. - Tomahawk

My brother is a respiratory therapist and he's seen people from all ages groups, that had COVID who have suffered and still suffer from significant lung damage. I'm sure athletes can withstand it a bit better than those who aren't in optimal physical condition, but that has to be rough! - aantny88
I wish the issue of long term effects received a little more attention in the media. When people see the <1% death rate, they seem to believe that for the other 99%, it's like the flu. A few days and then no further effects. If a top notch athlete in the peak of his life needs to use an inhaler, that speaks for itself.
And who it affects is so random. I have relatives where an entire family of two guys (in 30s), their parents (mid to late 60) and grandparent (95) all tested +. The person who suffered the least was the 95. Granma did not even break a fever. All recovered except the mom, who is 65. Six months later, she still cannot return to full time work.

I was honestly trying to get out of watching tonight but with Allison in the line-up I'll be watching. I'm hoping he brings a spark. Looking forward to seeing him. |

Not that I don't feel for those folks, because I wouldn't wish that on anyone, but isn't the % of long haulers pretty low, too?

I'm pretty wrong there. Seems a majority of folks still feel some effects three months on.

How common are lingering COVID symptoms?
Tens of thousands of people in the United States have lingering illness following COVID-19. In the US, we call them post-COVID “long haulers.” Currently, the condition they are suffering from is known as “long COVID,” although other names are being proposed.
Published studies (see here and here) and surveys conducted by patient groups indicate that 50% to 80% of patients continue to have bothersome symptoms three months after the onset of COVID-19 — even after tests no longer detect virus in their body.
Which lingering symptoms are common?
The most common symptoms are fatigue, body aches, shortness of breath, difficulty concentrating, inability to exercise, headache, and difficulty sleeping. Since COVID-19 is a new disease that first appeared in December 2019, we have no information on long-term recovery rates.
Who is more likely to become a long hauler?
Currently, we can’t accurately predict who will become a long hauler. As an article in Science notes, people only mildly affected by COVID-19 still can have lingering symptoms, and people who were severely ill can be back to normal two months later.
However, continued symptoms are more likely to occur in people over age 50, people with two or three chronic illnesses, and, possibly, people who became very ill with COVID-19.

Yeah, think it was Jody Shelley that said that after PPs that didn't go well, G, Jake and Simmer would be fuming coming back to the bench. They'd get into it with each other and sometimes it would get so bad they'd be on the verge of fisticuffs. Shelley said it was (frank)ing hilarious to watch. But they were all buds so it was left on the ice. |

He would be a great fit. 5 years left at 4.75 so not sure why LV would want to get rid of a cost controlled solid player like that.

Supervisor has authority though. If a young guy slacks off what can a Vet really do? They can tell them to stop slacking but they cant make them. All they can do is potentially report it to the coach. The only thing you can really put on the vets is if they are slacking themselves. Your Vets set an ecxample for the young kids so if they arent setting a good example, the kids will do as they do.
I think Giroux is the same way but cant confirm but in SJ, Thornton was always a player that showed up for optional skates. That set a good example for younger players - xShoot4WarAmpsx
Thornton's leadership went way beyond setting an example. He's supposedly the best dude ever, super thoughtful teammate.
Brendan Dillon had a couple cool stories about how good Joe was to him after he just got traded there and didn't really know anybody. Not only did he bend over backwards to include Dillon, he befriended his parents as well and brought half the team over to Dillon's parents for dinner lol. |

A Mike Keenan story about when he coached a young Thornton with the Bruins: "I look at Joe Thornton, who has like 5 pounds of fat in his belly -- a gut hanging out and he's just a kid -- and I tell him, "Joe, I want you to get on the bike." He said, "For how long?" I said, "I'll come get you." Well, I went back to my office and I had a few things to tend to. I forgot all about Joe. About 90 minutes go by. A trainer knocks on the door and he says, "Joe wants to know if he can get off the bike now. He said his butt is getting sore."

I am surprised too to see that high a %. But my guess would have been about 20% (very high).
A couple I know in their sixties had very mild Covid. A year has gone by, and they still don't have their sense of taste or smell.
Other than the usual comorbidities, I am aware of a genetic variation that makes people more susceptible, and blood type. Type O seems to rarely get very sick; type A fares the worse.
I cannot help but see a parallel between total and partial rebuilds of hockey franchises and draconian measures versus partial lockdowns against Covid. The latter of both of the comparisons so rarely seem to work, and only defers the reckoning, and bases its allure on people who refuse to look at data.
This will get political in a jiffy, so I will get out of this sub-thread. |

Maybe that's why Joe never took that stacked club and ever win anything.
Part of being very successful in life is being an bumhole. Its sad, but empirically very often (but not always) true.
