You don’t like Ron Hextall’s Washington Generals tonight? Come on man.
- hereticpride

This team quit a while ago, so in the game tonight....if I were betting, I would take the Generals. Probably a 6-1 Penguins win tonight, even against their rivals. They're playing out the string.

Breaking News: The Flyers have signed the Harlem Globetrotters' Hammer Harrison. The Hammer is back!

I would not be surprised to see a different Flyers team come out tonight. The "good" Flyers of April. Because that was arguably the best team in the East they played last game. They (Caps) shellacked Boston the game before. Boston without 3 D but with intact forwards corps.

So who does that point to though, Giroux or just the team in general lacked that type of individual, or even management? I think it’s clear that G and Jake are competitors but maybe the room just seriously lacks that Pronger like presence.
- ClaudeFather

Seemed like Weise was suggesting that Hak had little rapport with many of the vets. He treated them like college kids who have no choice but to listen when the power dynamic in the pros is actually completely reversed. The high-paid vets are gonna outlast the coach, so the coach is the one that needs to reach out and find a way to earn trust and buy-in. Weise said Hak was a good guy, but maybe just didn't have the coaching range at the time to get the team under him.

Think a lot of times we expect the captain or one prominent leader to be capable of corralling the entire room on behalf of the coach thru force of will in that kind of situation. Don't think it really works that way either.

From what I understand when the flyers came out of the COVID break, they changed to a more aggressive forechecking strategy sending two forwards in. They were playing primarily a 1-2-2 prior to that and had more success slowing teams through the neutral zone

Can we discuss why the coaching staff has continued to stick with a forechecking system that, while it’s what the league has gone to for the most, doesn’t really seem to fit the makeup of the forwards of this team?

What it has looked like all year when other teams easily navigate our two plodding fore checkers is something like Terrell Owens catching a crossing pattern pass and running in open field past linebackers and safeties, all....year....long.

Flyers coaches are the smartest guys in the room. Do not EVER question them, their tactics, ro personal deployment again!

I definitely thought Hak was in over his head. When people say, "The problem wasn't the coaches..." I think that's too broad a brush. I think Hak should have been let go after the first season when we lost in the first roound, and the fact that he wasn't let go when we went backwards and missed the playoffs... at least he should have been let go mid 2nd season. It was just weird watching the team: he kept trying the same things, saying the same things, and it just got worse.

You know we keep saying the Leadership Group is G and Jake. Does it include anyone else? I'd love to know what Dale was thinking beyond them. I don't think the "Richards showing up without working out and leading us silently" is a good leadership model for G. But who else is a "leader" in the room? JvR? Hayes? Any defenseman since Pronger?

- therabbi

Coots, G, JVR, Braun are all respected but more lead by example. When they do talk, people listen. Dunno if they follow, but they listen, lol.

Jake and Laughts are supposedly the vocal ones now. Simmer was supposedly super vocal in the room, calling people out, threatening violence, etc. They could probably use another guy like that in the mix.

This offseason, G to MTL for Weber with MTL retaining $1.25M of Weber's salary for the remainder of his current contract. He's 35 now, and with the salary retention his AAV would be $6.6M through the '25-'26 season. Sounds rough, but is it really that much worse than Karlsson (30, $11.5M thru '26-'27), Burns (35, $8M '25-'26), or Doughty (31, $11M thru '26-'27)? And I know, just because those teams have bad contracts doesn't mean we should take a potential one on. Weber's still playing 22+ minutes per night this season.

We get a RH D man to play with & mentor Provy and a change in leadership. Yeah, the last couple years of the deal could be tough to deal with. But would that be cancelled out by the impact he would have in the early years? Plus pairing him with a young guy like Provy would ease the burden on both, and could prolong Weber's effectiveness for the later years of the contract.

MTL does this because it's the only way they get out of that contract.

Once Weise is a member of the Kraken, he'll help "recruit" Patrick?

Patrick has sucked. It doesn't matter why. There was no time since entering into the NHL where he hasn't. They need to trade him ASAP.

I get that. But if jake is telling them to be. Insistent with their game it’s the old. Do as I say not as I do. We’ve all seen when he’s on his horse and when it is drinking water.

In my job. I’ve got a lot of time on compared to other guys. So I slack and I don’t get blowback from supervisors that the young guys do for doing the same things. The young guys know this. Whose fault is it?
- Just5

Supervisor has authority though. If a young guy slacks off what can a Vet really do? They can tell them to stop slacking but they cant make them. All they can do is potentially report it to the coach. The only thing you can really put on the vets is if they are slacking themselves. Your Vets set an ecxample for the young kids so if they arent setting a good example, the kids will do as they do.

I think Giroux is the same way but cant confirm but in SJ, Thornton was always a player that showed up for optional skates. That set a good example for younger players
