Karine Hains: Numbers Crunching Ahead The trading part of Marc Bergevin’s job may be finished for this season, but he will have plenty of work to do prior to the expansion draft and free agency.

excellent as usual Karine. we were just talking about that in the previous thread.
I agree with you 100%.
they could also decide not to qualify Lekhonen and let him walk. replace him by Poehling while Caufield would replace Armia.

if they keep both Weber and Price, which is probably what they're gonna do, they don't have enough cap space to get really better. too much $$$ invested in a #1G who plays 50 games.
if they trade them, there's no guarantee they will be able to replace them to become a better team. but at least they'd have a chance, which option 1 doesn't give them.

I agree with you completely in that they're better off dealing them, but that seems like a monumental task. Even if they do it, good luck replacing them with something good. That's why I thought it made sense to either swing for the fences this year while they can still play at an ok level or sell and prepare for KK and Suzuki's primes.

that will only be done by the next GM. MB won't.
as or the replacement, highly possible to sign a decent goalie for 6x6. look around the league. Grubauer comes to mind.

If we want to get their quicker bring up Primeau for next season and have him back up Price and hope that works out. As for Weber can we not work on a deal with Seattle to try to get him there? Likely oversimplifying but there has to be a way

My issue is even if they get Weber to Seattle, who replaces him? He's still a borderline top 4 D and Montreal doesn't have any A tier prospects coming up on D. They're kinda (frank)ed as they lack any elite D prospects.

Also we better (frank)ing pray Primeau works out.

If they we're to expose and lose Weber to Seattle, they could certainly use the 8 million dollars or so freed up to replace him

Mini rant:

Salary caps are the ultimate double edged sword in pro sports. They've essentially saved a lot of small market teams in some sports, they've led to increased parity, increased player income especially at the lower and middle levels and provided a model where both ownership and players are guaranteed a fair slice of the pie. They've also ruined the way we look at players. We don't see a human being we root for playing for a team we love, we see a contract length and value under an overlay of stats backing up whether they do or don't "earn" their pay for the team we love. I want to be able to cheer for a player and stop concerning myself with his contribution on an economic scale. I want to be able to like Carey Price without somebody asking me if I $10.5m a year for five years like him.

So, long and short, we need salary caps but they've taken a lot of the fun out of sports from a fan perspective.

End rant.

7.8M is more than enough to sign a top4 dman. younger, more mobile

I think it is kinda BS also how a team like Tampa benefits from lower taxes, so has a higher effective "cap" by being able to offer more money in free agency with less cap hit.

Definitely, but Montreal has had issues attracting a lot of UFAs, probably partly for the reason I just talked about in high taxes. This year with Toffoli was somewhat of an exception with less cap to go around with COVID.

The fact that I have decent knowledge of the levels of state taxes throughout a country I don't live in for that exact reason is kinda sad

If you do get rid of Weber though, it’s worth thinking about how this team is built... spending so heavily on defence is not necessarily wise, replace weber for cheaper and invest more up front.

- I bet Weber plays one more year and calls it quits

- The investments up front will hopefully go to Kotkaniemi, Suzuki & Caufield, and by hopefully I mean because they would have earned it and played up to big contracts over the next 2-3 years.

- You really believe Bergy would cough up a 1st just to get rid of Byron's contract? I highly doubt he would.

Well that was too easy, I'm sure we can find something to argue about...

Taxes is one part but I think we have a team now that is more attractive to players via ufa or trade than the past 10 years I say
