Brian Sickles: Caps Make Two Trades on Deadline Day. Vrana/Mantha Trade Reaction
- Brian Sickles

I agree with you Brian. Maybe 55-45 Detroit here, but Mac is under a lot of pressure knowing the window is closing.
Had nothing to work with and yet managed to make the team better in my opinion. Well it cost a pick, but I feel like it will be worth it.
Vrana is a good player on a given night, but never will be your leader. Had issues with every single coach in DC, never felt like he gives it all he's got.
Mantha is on a reasonable contract and Lavi probably likes him.
So will see...

Well, if you think Vrana is one that doesn't give it all on the ice, wait till you see Mantha. As a Wings fan, I've watched him ever since he arrived in Detroit. He could be a superstar if he were to give all every time on the ice, but he doesn't. He plays great for a few games, then becomes a spectator standing around watching the play. He could easily help the Caps in the playoffs, but he could also stay in the shadows. You'll have to wait and see. He has 11 goals this year, but given his talent, he should have 20 goals by now. Good luck with him.

Hopefully Jeremy Laura doesn’t read this comment. I’ll have you know, rather Jeremy Laura would, that Mantha is the second coming of Lindros, Vrana is Darren Helm 2.0 and a rebuilding team would never value 1st or 2nd round picks.

Obvs Vrana fell out of favor with the new coach and never recovered. He needs a change as does Mantha. To get rid of Panik's 2 more years at 2.75 million is worth the extra draft pick and the Detroit GM isn't going to simply do a 1 for 1, he needed a sweetner for the player for player trade. Caps now have cost certainty, which is very important and can plan to re sign Ovi and Sammy (unless Vitek is the future, then Sammy might get traded this summer also). Once the expansion draft is completed, the Caps can bring up a ready forward or D man cheap to fill that void. Good luck to both players and Panik.

There is zero chance of Ovi signing new contract with Caps if he is being blocked from going to Olympic 2022

Can someone here give us some insight on Panik ? I don't know much about him. Does he have any upside? Just wondering what he brings to Detroit.

I know he was a salary dump... but I'm hoping he can add some value to the team other than just expansion draft protection for other Detroit players.

I see Mantha has a goal and an assist tonight in the game. Congrats guys... I do hope he has a great career in Washington. I wish him the best.

I'm still a bit disappointed in the trade and I think the Wings won this one.

However, Mantha played very well and is a big body out there. It could be a brilliant move if he's motivated now that he'll be on a cup contender.

Ovi, needs to pick it up the rest of the season.
