Karine Hains: Time for a Change? As the trade deadline approaches and as Marc Bergevin is no doubt eyeing a contract extension, is it time to put Jonathan Drouin on the trading block?

To be honest, I have nothing against Drouin per se, I still think he could become a very good player, but he probably would have better odds of doing that elsewhere... far away from Montreal and the pressure which is always worst on the quebecers

you don't build your team around a player like him. he's not and never will be the go to guy, a leader. he's an average 2nd liner who plays on the outside. French or not. time to move on.

To be honest, I like Drouin, and I wanted it to work in Montreal. At the time I was scratching my head because the Habs didn't have a lot of depth in the pipeline and especially on defense. So throwing away their best prospect for Drouin at the time was a weird move.

The move made more sense when Radulov left for Dallas, I thought that Drouin could be a younger, a bit less effective but still good replacement, especially since he was still young at the time and had room to grow.

Truth is, he doesn't seem to have made strides that way since he started playing here. Never looked like the guy who was making highlight reel plays with Tampa Bay. Now, since his wrist injury, it's even worse. His shot seems weaker, it also looks like he has trouble stick handling and coughs up the puck regularly.

I really don't know where to go from here.

trade him, get what you can, move on. unless you want MB to extend him in 2 years?
I don't think so....

Good blog Karine.
It would seem that Drouin would be the most disposable of the Players and if Berg can make the team better while doing so he should do it ASAP.

Detroit needs a stud LD so Drouin would be useful for Yzerman.

Before the season started, I said this year would define what Drouin was as a player. It was his last chance to prove he's more than a 50 points, inconsistant, peripheral player.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't give him away for nothing. We don't have the luxury of giving away offensive players.

But as I mentioned in the other thread, with the cap space we have, there are better players to spend that money on, even within the team.

before the season started, my mind was already made up. we've seen enough. him and Domi were 2 calculated risks, both failed. poop happens. move on.

Well, Domi failed but in the end it seems to have paid off to get Anderson in return

Yeah that’s well put, I kind of had made my peace with the fact that he wouldn’t be one of the leader but the price tag he comes with messes the salary structure for what he delivers...

Having given Sergachev for him, I think Bergevin REALLY wanted him to work out though... I think the timing to trade him is better now than it would have been 2 years ago though

agreed. maybe this summer, but with this covid flat cap... it's won't be easy. but certainly possible. some teams have problems signing yop UFAs. Drouin having 2 more years to his contract could be of interest for some of them.

Do you ever read Brian Wilde’s articles? He wrote about how Bergevin should not protect Weber at the expansion draft and ask Price to wave is NMC and leave him unprotected as well because their contract meant Seattle wouldn’t take them and I see his point.

If by some miracle Seattle were to pick one of the 2, the Habs could finally commit more money to the attack by replacing either by some lower paid option. I think in this league, you need a good attack to win and just building around the goalie is an outdated and flawed model. Say we protect Allen and Price gets picked, we could bring up Primeau to split the workload with Allen and we’d have 10 millions to spend on the attack...that would go a long way to helping this team...

he's probably right, but I highly doubt MB would agree
