Carol Schram: Canucks officially announce Pearson, Demko extensions; return still TBA The worst of the Covid-19 outbreak is behind the Vancouver Canucks, but the team still doesn't have a date for when they'll get the green light to re-open their facility, or when they can resume their schedule. In the meantime, the club officially announced contract extensions for Thatcher Demko and Tanner Pearson, and indicated that action would likely be limited leading up to Monday's trade deadline.

Ferland signing had glaring red flags and Seattle is not taking Holtby. The writer is an idiot but with some valid points. This Pearson extension was the least pressing issue for the Canucks. I swear Benning did it because he thought it would be some kind of public relations coup. Now they have COVID as an excuse for a dumpster fire of a season. Yay!! Only 2 more years until they are competitive, according to the GM. What a joke. From we can turn this team around quickly to 7 years later, "we need 2 more years."

You say that but if he would have "run out of time", you would be yelling at him for not getting it done

No I wouldn't. I have never indicated I wanted him signed or extended. Never. I would have preferred he was traded at the deadline.

Who is the replacement though? The expectations are always that Jim is going to get the best deal and the best player in a trade and the team is going to win every game and every decision he is going to make is going to be a clear cut no doubt about it win.

I don't think you can expect anything clear cut, but Toffoli to Hoglander is a situation where its a step back but value per dollar is much more efficient and better long-term. Same with walking from Markstrom and Tanev, they held firm and its worked out ok with those replacements. If no hometown discount, find alternatives like they did a few months ago. To me, it just has an odor of desperation that I don't like, both from timing and value

Benning reacts to his previous mistakes by making more.

Would I have liked Toffoli? Sure, but I don't think walking away from any of those were a mistake (especially if you're resetting for 2 years from now, but we all know he wasn't thinking that at the time )

I wasn't upset with last summer's exodus. In hindsight, I would have preferred they kept Toffoli over Virtanen. We ran out of time, we need 2 more years and we look at things day by day, I find unsettling.

Thanks for the clarification on buyout implications with LE. I couldn't figure out how to project that.

Or not having the depth to insulate the younger players and cover injuries.

Didn't they bring in cap guru's Ryan Biech (who everyone loved) and Chris Gear as capologist.

I honestly don't know. If they are there, how much say do they have, and what are their roles?

I know with the taxi squad and LTIR there was a lot of cap hoop-jumping this year, so I'd assume they work on that type of thing. But I doubt they'd be the ones saying sign this guy for this much, or we have to waive player X.

Well it says Biech joined as video and analytics guy. Chris Gear as an Asst. GM as a cap guru for them.

I don't know how much say but I'm sure Jim says "I'd like to do this, can we do it?" Gear probably tells him yes or no.
