Yes, 7th rounders can occasionally make it to the NHL. Even rarer, they turn into notable players. The 7th rounder is a throw-in. Basically a non-entity.
- Chunk

Sure it is when some teams will miss on players or refuse to draft them b/c the didn't see them a whole lot but ion your scouts did watch close a year earlier, they will be more prospects slipping through to the seventh this year than ever...and we will have evidence by 2028 if it is so. lol!

Why would you care if Carlsson turns out if you're a Hawks fan?
- GPHawksfan

Just cheering for him to make NHL grade. Not each prospect turns out as top players, but I had hoped that he could be a complimentary bottom pair or depth

If Carlsson is the best player in this deal, then we lost the trade. Most if not each player both sides are not going to stick around. If Stillman is worthwhile, they do not trade him. We have to hope that the former first round kid is ok. Again if he was a descent prospect then Florida shouldn't have cared. We now are saddled with Connelly contract which is unnecessary. Rather they kept a couple pieces and gave us even a 4th. Bowman still reeling from Edsel sucks.

They win Carlsson not bad.

- jhawk59

WTF?
Jimbo, I know likes you some Carlson, but I simply dont see him as a difference maker...just an adequate fill in for their injured minute munching eckblad, and a player Q knows something about.

This trade is about what COULD turn out to be future players if they develop, and taking on contract in Connolly, and less about Q stole the next Bobby Orr.
But it is the same logic I use when a trade of all NHL players is mad, who got the best player. Tell me who got the best player between bluejackets and Jets?

Florida wants to find more deals have space to do so, but how do you think Connolly got a 3.5 mil contract?
Carlsson is making 792,000 paid by the hawks to play in Panther land. as is the other guy Wallmark. WE pay them.
I think that is why the best player doesn't work in this one especially since Connolly is making g a hole lot $ no one wishes they had to pay him, but salalry wise, what year will Crlssom be making 3.5 mil
just take a guess and tell me of?

that will be what helps me see your statement as valid all around.

So we trade 2 players that really aren't a part of the Hawks future, take on kind of expensive player and 2 young players, i don't understand how you lose a trade when you give away nothing for something.[/quoteI

I agree this is pretty of the rebuild, and sometime they bring you good new prospects other times not.

Since Uncle Dale is only good at drafting in the top 3 spots, is it safe to assume that Bjorgstrom is garbage?

Yeah 7th rounders - total garbage. Just ask the teams who drafted Zetterburg, Hornqvist and Pavelski. They never won nothing.

Is Carlsson even a top 4 in Rockford?

Theo indicates that Carlsson has developed into a solid dman at AHL level. He is better than each of those prospects at this time due to experience. Long term the others may prove better. We can get good input from Theo who watches their progress each AHL game and comments upon good and bad points

I am not projecting Carlsson for more than third pair and depth at NHL level. That is all I see- no big deal.

He was playing with physical game which might have helped if for the most part the top other dmen prospects din't play too much that way. Although wiz has pointed out to me that the NHL game is trending more towards able puck movers and generators, there remains a need for some physical style dmen.

The players we moved weren't in Blackhawk plans, whereas the players we received might have a role here. So this is a win win trade. We now have two salaries to deal with if Vinnie and Connelly are both here next season. I expect that Carpenter and Soderberg will not be here though.

Bowman speaking now after the trade.

He says they're trying to get Connolly and Stillman to join the Blackhawks on their road trip in Columbus this weekend.

Says he looks at Connolly's contract "as a manageable amount for a consistent goal-scorer."

On Borgstrom: "He seemed destined for greatness in the AHL, and it didn't happen right away. That's the way it goes for young players sometimes."

Says his skill set has been evident in Finland this year. "There's tremendous upside. He has to turn that potential into reality."

On Stillman: "He's a different style than almost all our young defensemen... The biggest thing with him is his competitive, aggressive style. He takes pride in the defensive part of the game."

Bowman says he expects Borgstrom to sign and be on the Blackhawks next season, not this season.

Bowman: "I've had several calls today. I expect that continue over the next few days... If we can make a move or two more, I wouldn't hesitate to do that."

Regardless of anything, there are now more pieces to add to a list for the Kraken to. mull over.
I don't care if one of these kids gets taken or who gets taken, we added to our young stable of players, period.
Whether they are sweetner for Kraken, or Seattle takes a hawk vet or whatever, the Hawks have more youth be patient with, more competition from guys that cannot ask for 4-12 million, just hungry hockey players.
At what cost, Carlsson? Wallmark? DONE.

Yea but the Hawks gave up nothing, nothing for 2 young players

Worse case scenario this is a nothing for nothing trade

Honestly Bowman has been pretty good with forwards, 5th round pick for Kubs are you (frank)ing kidding me

- BetweenTheDots

I hear 7th's are more valuable.

If you looked back over the past couple of years of your draft evaluation work, which Finnish kid would you have rate higher - Borgstrom or Montreal's Kotkaniemi and why?

IMO, Carlsson is the type of prospect who develops into a player who is fine for now but easily replaceable when the next prospect comes along. Tops out as a 3rd pair or 6/7 tweener.

Boqvist, Mitchell, Beaudin, and Kalynuk are a cut (or several cuts) above and have potential to be top 4.

I like Regula but think he may be closer to Carlsson's M.O. than the Big 4 prospects. Krys is similar, too.

The Hawks only acquired the rights to Henrik Borgström. He’ll need a new contract.

It seems like that’ll come this summer rather than now. Borgström is playing in Finland currently and agent tells me he doesn’t expect to play in North America this year.

Borgström is eligible for the expansion draft even without a contract,

I don't think any of these new guys are a replacement for somebody else, they're just simply more players to compete for positions in the nhl. The best players at each position will win the job so that's all this really is

Who used the term GM Speak?

Bowman can BS with the best of them. Everybody he acquires is on the verge of greatness or provides a dimension the Hawks don't currently have. But the GM of the team he acquired them from for certain doesn't view these guys as difference makers and since he didn't draft or sign them he sees them as totally expendable so he dumped them on Stan to save a few bucks on the cap.

But based on Stan's verbal diarrhea, I am expecting him to dump Strome and a bunch of others in trade by Monday; send Ian Mitchell to the Dylan Sikura junk pile permanently because Stillman has defensive attributes nobody else has. And Brett Connoly will score enough goals to propel the Hawks into the playoffs.

Stay tuned for the next episode of BS from Stan as soon as he makes another trade right after the game tonight.

- RickJ

Did the GM from Florida think the value of cap flexibility outweighs the value or potential Borgstrom? I think so...and for a team that didn't make the playoffs last year he is under pressure to go for it and this trade may allow him to do so.

Florida had all of the cap space they need even before the trade. Likely they feel the young prospects they have in their system now are better than Borgstrom.

Now they have even more to go after a defenseman like David Savard and a possible forward like Taylor Hall or Foligno since some of their guys are hurt. Plus they have lundell at center as a prospect so Borgstrom became expendable.

Does a team ever have enough cap space? Now Florida has more if they want to make a bigger splash in the next few days.

After including Connolly's salary the Hawks still have 21M in cap space to take on some salary. Unfortunately, if acting as a middleman (middleperson ?) in a 3 way trade, they can only retain on one more salary.

Don't start munching on chips now Stan. Weaponize that cap space and get the best return available.

Per capfriendly Hawks actual salary outlay this season 64.5M, Florida 70.3M.
