To be fair, zebra brains don't need to think about this one. It's a purely objective call.

The problem is every other potential penalty has to go through some sort of subjective "game management" filter before getting called (or not).

There shouldn't be gradations of cross-checks or slashes and there certainly shouldn't be some sort of over-arching, arbitrary layer on top of the rules during a game. If you see a cross-check or slash, call the (frank)ing penalty.

It shouldn't take an audio recording to fire a ref for incompetence or cheating, nor should the league be absolved from proper rules and suspensions. How is it that Tkachuk clearly elbows one of the Jet's best players badly injures him (possibly shortens his career) and does not get a 20 game suspension?

Damien Cox did have a good idea. He's calling on the media to name the refs making these horrible calls. It's been accepted far too much in the NHL. They are making calls based on the score.
