Was a good game officiating is what the league tells the balloonhead zebras to call. Cross-check in front of the net ok, slew foot ok, tap on the gloves, pants or stick automatic penalty, bludgeon a guy into the boards, sometimes penalty (Kadri) sometimes ok (Anderson, Tkachuk), flip the puck over the glass automatic penalty, run the goalie ok. - winsix
teams like to send out 6 players to play against the Leafs and get away with it but last night. |

I'm guessing there was confusion because the refs somehow decided not to call the obvious icing on the Leafs.
First time I saw Ducharme lose his cool.

Remember when we were the slumping Leafs?
We currently have the best record in the league for past 10 games, and the longest current winning streak. |

To be fair, zebra brains don't need to think about this one. It's a purely objective call.
The problem is every other potential penalty has to go through some sort of subjective "game management" filter before getting called (or not).
There shouldn't be gradations of cross-checks or slashes and there certainly shouldn't be some sort of over-arching, arbitrary layer on top of the rules during a game. If you see a cross-check or slash, call the (frank)ing penalty. |

Some fun with Excel.
Leafs currently have 57 points, playing .71% hockey. If we go .500 over our remaining games, we hit 73 points.
Edmonton has 50 points (.63%). To get to 73 points, they'd need to go 11-4-1 (.72%).
Winnipeg has 49 points (.63%). To get to 73 points, they'd need to go 12-5-0 (.71%)
Montreal has 43 points (.60%). To get to 73 points, they'd need to go 15-5-0 (.75%).
First place is looking good. |
