All bad contracts currently on the books will be gone. But if it's still JB at the helm, he's going to continue to sign the type of contracts we've seen the past 7 years. So, it will always be a constant level of cleaning up.
- NewYorkNuck

Perhaps. His signings have been a lot better lately. He is learning. Not sure why it took 7 years to learn something

Sounds like negotiating against an imaginary team to me. #Canucks

Just awful negotiating

So they signed him before the market for full market value? Smooth operator. Glad he got that done so soon

Pettersson's/Hughes' agent is expecting short term contracts

Also said they'll be combo deals like they did with Toews/Kane

- WhiteLie

Now people can stop pretending that Petey is going to get 1.5 mil more than Hughes

Have they though? And have they been better in terms of being good, or better than Jim Benning bad?

His signings have gotten better, but they're not great. The Pearson deal is an example. That's not a great contract, for a player his age, in the situation they're in, for full market value and trade protection.

I think everyone would have preferred he was traded for a 2nd and he circled back in the summer. This organization has always been plagued by loyalty. They didn’t owe Pearson or the Sedins etc anything. It’s a (frank)ing business 🤷‍♂️

Real question: is it going to raise Hughes' AAV, or lower Petey's?

I believe so. The Pearson contract is fair. It just didn’t need to be signed now. Where was the urgency

At this point I'd be fine if a new GM came in and moved out a bad contract or two with sweetners and bought out a couple more. Bite the bullet now so they can move forward with a bit more clarity and purpose.
- NewYorkNuck

i agree that a reset would be nice.

most of us saw the cap crunch coming. the pandemic gave an excuse to those that didn't want to see it.

I don't disagree if you mean big contracts as I have my reservations with both players.

However I don't think you can point and say great core if you don't think those two are long term fits. Either way it's a risk, but 6 year deals would buy up some UFA years and possibly be a discount during years 3-6.

The problem is, we can't overpay now because of the bottom 6 garbage.

- golfingsince

I think both at their ages are worth the gamble long term but I don't think JP Barry or the players want it. Draisaitl's contract looked questionable at first but now its arguably a bargain vs other top players. They can make more money on multiple contracts than locking in for 7-8 years

Both I would think. With Hughes there was a chance to get a lower cap hit due to such a small sample size, defensive lapses, etc. Petey was probably going to get 10 mil pre-covid, and he's now been out injured so I think that number drops even more.

I honestly don't know what that number would be, maybe around 6.5/7 mil?

my thoughts exactly, market value plus NTC. No benefit to getting it done now, hell even waiting until after the TDL in case an amazing offer comes through would have made more sense

not true at all. Anyone could pick 1-3 players on each team, where they are severely overpaid per their production. The variance is obviously how much they make compared to what they provide. The bigger comparison needs to be how many of these bad contracts each team has, compared to ours, and how they are doing in the standings compared to us.

Take Boston for example. Since 2011, they have remained extremely competitive, continued to draft well, and have a projected 29.5 million in cap space next season with the following players left to sign:

Krecji 7.25 mill (will probably let walk)
Nick Ritchie 1.49 (will probably give a slight raise)
Kuraly 1.275 (wil probably get a slight raise)
Blidh 700k (will let walk)
Kevan Miller 1.25 (will probably give a slight raise or let walk)
Kampfer 800k (will give a slight raise)
Tinordi 700k (will most likely let walk)

their core is signed to good, capfriendly long term deals outside of Coyle, and Debrusk, and they have a ton of cap space to continue to insulate that Core with complimentary deals. They continue to get value complimentary deals at reasonably low costs, where we are paying between 3mill and 4.5 mill to do the same thing, yet ours aren't providing that value (Beagle/Roussel/Sutter

- Codes1087[Sutter hasn't actually been bad this year, but its the last year of his 4 year contract where he sucked entirely up until now)

I watched 3 Boston games last week. Pretty much everything you say here was not what the commentator's were saying about the team. They would say things that this team should go out and get some bottom 6 upgrades.

Sean Kuraly has been a healthy scratch a few times this season. He probably does deserve a raise.

David Krejci is probably the most underrated player in the league has been boosting his line mates for years. If he walks. You probably aren't getting the same production out of your 2nd line. Going to need better players, they are going to cost more.

Van's bottom 6 sucks and they paid for players that were better on other teams. Like Tim Schaller who was nowhere near as good in Van as he was in Boston.

Don't forget the upgrade they want on their defence. I'm sure that won't come cheap.

Exactly. I agree, the contract itself isn't bad. But contextually, for this team, it's not a good contract... again.

I agree, I won't go into detail, as I have expressed my opinion about these players and the makep of this team, plenty of times and don't feel like upsetting the masses today.

"hometown discount" or deals like that are a thing the past. Players want to be paid. If you don't pay it, someone else will.

I kind of agree with golfing on this, if these two are not worth the largest contracts, then what kind of core do you have? The make up of the team has issues, but that shouldn't shy them away from handling the two bright spots worth building around in my opinion

Nice numbers, but the guy is an idiot. Juolevi will easily slot beside Schmidt, Gaudette could easily be the 3RW and Podk on Bo's wing. Myers is not easily replaced, some nights he looks bad, but we are a better team with him and are not finding better in FA and nobody wants to spend the assets to get someone better. Pearson is probably 250k more than he should, but again not easily replaced and not for that kind of money. Ferland if he were healthy is not replacement level. Since Ferland is LTIR during the summer it really doesn't matter.
Hamonic will likely resign cheap and play with Hughes, he wants to stay out west for his daughter which limits options. Based on his numbers(and signing Hamonic) we have 5m to find a 3C and 4C via UFA or trade...not hard to do. This is also assuming Seattle doesn't like the idea of Holtby(good chance they take him over what ever else we have) and JV can be bought out give an extra 2.5m if we can't find a trade.
