Can't wait for JBs presser about how Tanner is a real important player for us and good in the room. I wonder how much an add would be to run on sportsnet 650 asking for Benning to be fired

Got to keep as least some of the production that is going to be lost after Boeser is traded.

Think NHL scouts made a mistake underrating Eamon Powell in 2020 and letting him slip to the 4th round (to Tampa no less). Maybe they fixated on his partner Sanderson too much.

Shouldn't be the case this year with Aidan Hreschuk (Luke Hughes's partner). He's 1st-round quality

--------------
(frank) sakes, he was my choice for Van's 3rd round pick last season.

Yeah, I wasn't on here for those but really didn't like the extension of Sutter before he even played a game. I'm OK with Pearson.

I think a lot of it is the wrong GM making the deals. A new GM comes in and does the same deal with Pearson and it probably gets applauded.

Won't be able to sign him after next season anyway. Maybe that's JB plan to back himself into a corner so he can't afford to sign boeser so we can trade him for dumba and a bag of fresh Walmart socks

Edit thats rediculous 2 bags of fresh Walmart socks

Way ahead of it's time. Not many people liked it when it first came out.
- Load Management

Also true. I kept telling my buddies to give the Album it's just due and they were like always...'meh'. Now they all love it lol

Reminds me a bit of when Metallica's Ride the Lightning and Master or Puppets came out. I knew Puppets was gonna be huge and innovative and ahead of it's time. Most of my music buddies were all like 'it's way too heavy and his vocals are weird' made me laugh. Now it's regarded in the top 5 of all time .

I can’t speak for others, but at this point I just feel apathy toward this regime. Panic for me was way back during the Sbisa/Sutter fiascos

At this point it would take something ridiculously and shockingly bad for me to care enough to panic

Quite honestly, with the way the world has been going, I'm afraid to look that far ahead. But I see more of the same, a team that goes only as far as the Goalie can carry them. At least until some of the kids get a chance to mature.

Eamon Powell is going to get drafted later than he should be.

Powell (#2) is a defender who skates at a high-level and can give you a bit of everything.

Excellent decision-making and the vision he shows on this play to nearly set up Bordeleau is incredible.

I don't think its entirely correct.

If Benning made this deal, without having messed up on Beagle/LE/Ferland/Sutter. This deal gets 1/8th of the criticism it does. I don't think people can blame Pearson for this deal, he gets stability and took a pay cut (albeit hes having a down year productivity wise).

If Benning was fired at the start of this season, and another GM came in and mimic'd this deal, it would 100% receive the same criticism, because its less about who made the deal, and more about the Canucks cap situation, the GM's forecast of when he thinks the team will be competitive again, the structure of the contract (protection, bonus's, backloaded, etc), and further limiting the amount of cap space left to sign the most important forward on the team, and the most important defenseman on the team.

i agree, so maybe Benning should focus on that said core, rather than giving soo much money to complimentary veteran pieces. Thats where he deserves the critcism he is facing.

LE - 6 mill
Sutter - 4.375
Beagle - 3
Ferland - 3.5
Myers - 6
Roussel - 3
Baertschi - 2.29 (buried in minors)

None of these guys should be considered core IMO, and thats a sh*t ton of money tied up in pieces that are replaceable. Just my opinion though.

you inadvertantly hit on the point. jb has done well in drafting and building a core. he is below average/poor in cap management and below average in pro-scouting/player acquisition.

where the team stands right now, the latter (professional player acquisition and cap management) is infinitely more important than drafting and building a core (which you have acknowledged is very good.)

that's the point: this is the time to bring in a re-tool on the fly guy.

jb has shown (even in yesterday's signing which was not bad/not great) that he is flying day to day with cap management. you might think this is a way to remain competitive but it is a way to remain mediocre at best.

you think, "give him another couple years to sort the cap out and let the core develop organically." that's fine but i disagree that they will be contenders with jb bringing in the complementary pieces. so at the end of the day, with another couple seasons, the jb experiment will have gone on for a decade.

the team's core will be fully mature and if the team is just a "playoff team" and not a contender, the team will be closer to full rebuild than retool.

at the end of the day: now is the time to get rid of jb. this is the time for retool on the fly. not 7 years ago and not 2 years from now.

You say replaceable but Chatfield, Raffy, Gaudette, Michaelis, Bailey. I could keep going on but it's not so easy to find players to replace the "easily replaceable"

All bolded are overpaid and in an absolute perfect world no GM would ever over pay, sounds like an easier said then done thing again.

I don't disagree with Chatfield, Rafferty, Gaudette, Michaelis, Bailey.

Chatfield - 700k
Rafferty - i believe 700k
Gaudette - 950k
Michaelis - 700k
Bailey - 750k
Hawryluk - 800k

These players were signed to these deals, and are the calibre of player in which ARE replaceable, because so much money was handed out in my list above.

ALL Gm's make mistakes, and All GM's overpay once in a while. Not many GM's make the number of mistakes and overpay as much as Benning does though, in my opinion.

I don't think Ferland was a bad deal, I actually think that was one of his best since he waited it out and got decent value and limited risk (due to LTIR).

But I 100% agree on the criticism. Regardless of who offered the contract, the Canucks are shooting themselves in the foot both in terms of cap space and as players in what should be a buyer's market ahead of the expansion draft. Instead of having room to make some shrewd deals, they are signaling to other teams that they are going to need to shed/sell, losing some valuable negotiation leverage. They are working against themselves

With Ferland it is less about the player, and more about the current state of the team, and the cap of the team, than it is about the signing (very similar to Pearson's signing yesterday).

The problem now, and continues to be, that we are pouring money into these free agents, these complimentary players, where we FINALLY have a good core

Petterson / Hughes / Horvat / Boeser / Hoglander / Podkolzin / Demko / Miller.

This is actually a fantastic core to build a team around. So Focus on them, he needs to stop handing cap out like candy to players who don't deserve it, and focus on the players above.

Disagree respectfully but all good.

In any other year where Petey was top 5 in scoring and Hughes was top 3 in Norris voting I'd say you are correct why sign Pearson when you have other contracts to worry about. Having said that Petey and Hughes will most likely get affordable bridge deals at this point which is what they deserve based off their play/injuries. so Pearson's contract will have no bearing on signing Petey and Hughes whatsoever.

He gave a league average contract to a slighty above league average production player. Pearson in the bottom 6 is a good thing. Depth is a good thing.
