Is this just a case of Volkov being passed on the depth chart by Colton and Joseph and making room for Stephens returning?

I think he perhaps could mesh with Terry as his C or maybe Rico..

I always liked Morand... he was fun to watch as a Gull down in San Diego.

Morand is an OK player who fit perfectly into the Ducks mold, he couldn't score. Effort and tenacity were never a question but he had just 6 goals over 2 seasons with the Gulls. Ironically, he scored an empty netter last night in a Gulls win before being told he was traded.

With Mitchell Stephens close to returning, this was the case. Tampa saves some cap space (just a little) while making space for others. Not sure what Volkov's situation is regarding options left, but it also might be that he would have to pass through waivers if he's sent back to the A for awhile. If that was the case, someone would have claimed him and we would have lost him anyways. While he does have skills, I just don't think it was meshing with what Tampa is doing. Hopefully he finds a spot and does well for Anaheim, as I always had high hopes for the guy.

Interesting for TB I believe Volkov has more talent than Stephen's, Joseph, Or Maroon.

Volkov is a very inconsistent player to be honest... I call him an enigma as he all the tools are there but he cannot get it all together. He might have a little more offensive upside but Colton and Stephens are Centers so they get the nod over Volkov and Joseph has been putting together a decent season. Volkov could not crack the top 9 on the Lightning.

I don't the Lightning wanted to get rid of Volkov but their hands are tied, sounds like they ran the risk of having to play only 5 Dman if more then 1 roster Dman is out with injury which currently McD and Cernak are both banged up. I think roster flexibility was the biggest factor and if they tried to sneak him thru waivers he would have been claimed. Colton coming in an producing and playing hard took Volkov's spot.

This move doesn't really move the needle for either club. I think JBB was going to risk losing Volkov to waivers and just wanted to get something for him. A undersized prospect and a late pick is better than nothing. Palat was a seventh round pick, although don't expect that to happen again. LOL.

Good luck to Volkov in Anaheim. Tampa loses another Yzerman-era "Ov" player. Nesterov, Namestnikov, and now Volkov.

Some observations from the peanut gallery about last night's game :

1) Losing McD and Cernak certainly exposes how thin the Lightning blue line is. Borgman and Rutta are warm bodies. Foote is still a rookie. After losing two of their top four, the Bolts yielded 41 shots against Vasi - and many more attempts. The Bolts blueline was bleeding opportunities for the opposition.

2) Yanni Gourde's contract doesn't look so bad now.

3) Palat is one of the Lightning's best forwards right now. He always has been, but lately he's really showing it. He was one excellent stick-paddle save away from putting the game away for good when Oettinger (sp?) robbed him blind.

4) The pushback from the Lightning that I expected in the 3rd period didn't materialize. For once, the Bolts really had no answer for a team that was exerting their will on them. Dallas looked determined and the Bolts looked lost.
