Do it. I think it would be fun from a Toronto fan perspective.

Also to be fair, I think this Barrie is the Barrie most people expected in Toronto.

Leafs fans were reasonably dissapointed with Barrie during his short tenure in Toronto but the numbers suggested that was a rough year rather than the new norm and his season with Edmonton is proving that.

Re-sign Barrie and Larsson.
Trade Bear and 1st for Ekholm after the expansion draft. Throw in Benson if you have to.
Assume Klefbom never plays again.

Next year:

Nurse-Barrie
Ekholm-Bouchard
Lagesson-Larsson
Russell

Eventually Broberg comes in for Lagesson.

How much is Ekholm going to command on his next deal though, after next season is over? I am guessing north of 6 or 7. I also think that Larsson will get too much as a UFA, someone will overpay and I can't see him signing an extension at reduced 3rd pairing rates until he sees what is out there. If Klefbom is completely done, which is possible, and it is possible to re-sign Barrie at something similar to the guestimated $/term, then I can just see the Oil chasing a defensively dependable LD to fill the 2nd pair spot until Broberg is ready.

Nurse-Barrie
Placeholder (Broberg)-Bouchard/Bear
Lagesson-Bouchard/Bear
Russell

A healthy Klefbom would look really good on that second pair next year though.

Barrie came here to pump up his stats to hopefully land a larger contract. Unless the whole market believes its purely the Mcd effect on his stats, I cannot see him going for less than 6. He was 5.5 prior to this year, and hes putting up Norris contention #s. I think the rumor was he turned down 6mil last year to sign with us. At 29, this is the time to sign that last big contract.
If he does get extended then Holland will have to play the game of subsidizing term for cap hit. We do have some room if larsson is gone and Kelf doesnt come back. We just need to make sure we have room to pay nurse, bear and possibly bouchard. We have 11 spots and 25 mil to play with (larsson, nuge and barrie arent part of that total but klef is). So if both nuge and barrie get 6, that leaves you $13mil for the remaining 9. I think if klef is really not coming back, then you can afford it. But without him going to Lu island, not sure we can have both Barrier and Nuge without really hamstringing us in 2 years when all those RFA contracts are up.

Other big issue with re signing Barrie is the money Nurse is going to want this time next year .. If you keep them both , then prob cant keep Larson and Klefbom...

Good blog.

I think money will be too tight to resign Barrie.

Nurse will cost a fortune and Klefbom will likely attempt some kind of comeback... that literally leaves nothing for signing Barrie.

Bouchard and Bear and ??? Is our future.

Tough question but if the idea is either klefbom or Barrie I think you take Barrie 7 days of the week just because of the likelihood of klefbom getting injured every year. As well teams should have more leverage this off-season when it comes to negotiating contracts due to the flat cap and the oilers could use the return on a klefbom trade to acquire a middle six forward:

I will also add that if the oilers move on from klefbom they could wait to sign Barrie until after the expansion draft and use the extra slot to protect Jones
