Yes, and to be fair, I don't remember if he was speculating, reporting what he was hearing, or just guessing.

I only brought it up as if true, would it effect the how the team looks at Kane vs. Toews?

- vabeachbear

He was just guessing. That's what he wrote anyway.

I'm sure Keith is doing some mentoring, but I think more than anything, he is just sick of them being mediocre at best and is "demanding" that the young D learn and improve quickly.

I've seen with Mitchell specifically, he has calmed down immensely. He is not nearly as frantic in the corners and makes quicker/safer outlet passes to get out of the zone. There are far fewer "hope" plays from him. Boqvist as well. He's much more direct and his carries into the zone have purpose instead of him just trying to take over and do everything himself.

- Chunk

Agreed. I think Mitchell had a great game last night. I wonder if they may put Beaudin with Keith for a few games when he comes back from Rockford. I really like his game too, but his primary partner was Zadorov, so he had little room for error.

If it were true that Toews opted out, but lied through his teeth about why he's not here, his credibility would be in the toilet.

Was it me or did it seem like Z and Murphy were collapsing deep into their own zone last night when a Wing player was crossing the blue line?

Tough schedule in March as we all know. 14 games in 27 days beginning Thursday. I'd be happy with 14 points. Hopefully wins against Dallas (2 games) and NSH (2 games), and some competitive games garnering some points againt TB (5 games), FLA (4 games) and CAR (1 game).

I doubt whether Toews actually opted out would change how anyone on the team or the league looks at him.

I think both Kane and Toews command a lot of respect in both the locker room and in eyes of opponents.

While Toews has always commanded respect, i,e, "Captain Serious", Kane has slowly built his to a very high level. Kane has always been known as a rink rat. A guy whose life is more or less defined by hockey. His camps with Belfry that attract the best talent in the league show the kind of respect he commands. On top of that, listen to what other players and broadcasters, both local and national say about him.

None of Toews being out this season, whether voluntarily or because of illness, changes any of that. The moment Toews steps back into that locker room he is Captain again.

I also wonder if Boqvist was dealing with a hip issue, his transition from skating forwards to backwards has been way way way more fluid than pre covid

Don't your 1st and last paragraphs contradict if he opted out and lied about it? For the record, I think there is no chance that happened - he would have said so if he were opting out, imo.

Maybe Toews has been suffering with this "injury" for a few seasons, but McD did not approve of doctors evaluating him.

Things could get ugly even if they play well. Maybe we should scratch our inner Vandy and start with a full line brawl. Start Big Z at center.
- mohel

No way Hawks win that game yesterday without "Big Z" scoring the first goal. You can put it on the board! Wink wink.

What he tells the team is not necessarily what he tells the fans I think it's safe to say. So far, no leaks from the locker room which is surprising.

The difference is if you assume he is lying about it. The amazing part of this whole saga is that there has been ZERO information beyond the initial statement.

While I agree that if he was actually opting out, his character is such that he would have said so, but........who knows. Maybe he went to mgmt and teammates and said, hey I need to sit this out because, covid, injury, family issues, etc. If that were the case you would think something would have slipped by now, but the complete radio silence and resulting speculation is...........not sure what term should be used.

Similarly speaking, you have only heard a little about Seabrook and his derailed "comeback" after surgery, and almost nothing about Shaw after he went on IR

It may be sacrilege here, but the beer league coach plays Z a lot, in tough situations, and against the other team's good players (just what it looks like to me, stat peeps feel free to correct me). It seems they don't think he sux, like many here do.

IF he is actually opting out - again, I don't think he is - his statement at the beginning of the season about sitting out would become one large lie.

Next 3 games against Tampa should tell us whether the Hawks can actually compete for a playoff spot or not. To me, it’s not the final scores that matter, it is how the young guys play.

I hope JC gives especially Bovquist and Mitchell big minutes, and doesn’t try and chase score and games, but continues the developement process.

Forwards are what they are. The Hawks are so thin after injury, you might see Kane playing 30 minutes. Walmart has been such a disappointment, I can’t wait for Strome to come back from concussion protocol.

- LAHawk

I still have the other mindset. Don't give Mitchell and Boqvist huge minutes. Let the vets play their game and keep working on slowly moving the young guys into more and more playing time. They can't throw the young guys to the wolves and expect them to learn how to win. It's best to bring them in learning how to win from vets.

If a player wants to opt-out of the season, they must provide written notice to the league.

They announced all that opted out for last year's playin (green, Harmonic, etc.) I know of one from Buffalo that opted out this year. Don't you think word of Toews would of gotten out if he opted out because of COVID?

If, more like when Toews comes back he'll be welcomed with open arms. The vets completely respect him, and the kids if they don't now they will quickly once he's on the ice again.
- BetweenTheDots

Yep. 100%. Still one of the top Captains in the NHL and part of the heart of this team. When guys like Toews are out, the team knows they each have to pick up a bit more slack to keep going and that is a good thing for the young guys to learn. I can't see there being any issues once he gets himself healthy again.
