Yikes😬
Step 1: manage your expectations for the kid who missed over a year of hockey
Step 2: realize that while he isn’t playing to potential, he is still a good young right-handed forward with size and hockey sense even without the puck
Step 3: wait until you have a longer uninterrupted stretch of play before evaluating his progress (try 20 games after Covid pause unless there is another one)
just my take - NC Flyers Fan
I already agree Patrick should get this year to prove himself. So far he has not, and in fact is not even close.

Why? he is an RFA after this season. You either sign him or trade him, and I would try to trade him while he still to some has promise. Nothing stupid about it. I mean between Couturier, Hayes, Laughton, Bunnaman, Frost and maybe even O'Brien as early as next year, not sure you need Patrick up the middle anymore. - jd250
Your comment was that you would not offer him another contract if he doesn't improve. There is absolutely zero risk to re-signing Patrick even if he doesn't improve
Just more comments that we can add to the list.

If you personally agreed to give him the year, why are you judging him now?

You mean, comments from you right? You want to keep playing Patrick with your fingers crossed hoping that 1. he does not get hurt again and 2. he somehow learns how to, what?, be a good 3rd line center? Sorry, I want to win a cup instead and I want players on the team that will help the Flyers do that.

But you'd give up York and multiple prospects and picks for Ekholm.

What needs to happen is a bounce back game for Hart. He's had a less than stellar season so far. |

No, I am LMAO from comments like this. You are going to compare TK's play versus Patricks? Really? TK has scored almost as many goals in 1 season than Patrick has in his entire career!

Poorly thought out again. All players face the prospect of getting hurt. Maybe you're not aware but a good 3rd line center and having center depth can absolutely help a team with a Stanley Cup. In fact, it's a very important position. Center depth is very important on a team. If Patrick can improve and solidify the 3rd line center spot behind Couturier and Hayes. That would be very good for the Flyers. He missed a lot of time and is still only what, 22? Honestly, what don't you get?

YUP! And to be factual I said York, another 2nd tier prospect and picks. I also suggested a trade where the Flyers send a 1st, 3rd, Frost (or another prospect) and Gust for Ekholm and Granlund.

We already have a good 3rd line center, his name is Scott Laughton. And we have some good centers waiting in the wings.
Bottom line, if you would resign him and keep going, fine, that's your opinion. I've seen enough of him but am willing to wait out the year before making the final call. If you don't agree, fine. In the end you may turn out to be right. If that happens I will be the first to tell you that you were right. However I'm pretty sure opposite will not be true.

Cap - Peter Richards
Yes, that is why I want to include Gust in the trade to get cap relief. Maybe the Preds want Ghost, and that would give us what we need in cap space.

Just like I'm glad you're not the coach in wanting to scratch Hayes, I'm also glad you're not the GM. To be accurate you said two second tier prospects. |

I personally like Laughton better at wing but he can play center. I'll explain what depth is. If the Flyers have a significant injury to Couturier or Hayes, Laughton might then become a 2nd line center. If Patrick improves and earns the 3rd line center spot, the team is then that much deeper. If we have an excess then there is assets for trades to improve the team elsewhere.
What you don't understand is that it's not about who turns out to be right about Patrick. It's about asset management and risk aversion. Even if he doesn't improve, it is a zero risk move to retaining Patrick.
