I'm.. not sure about that one. If someone is hit without possession.. isn't that interference?
- j.boyd919

We see hits all the time when the puck is at their feet/before they actually have possession. Plus, he himself said that he touched the puck. He's splitting hairs over what constitutes possession when we all know the player doesn't need control of the puck to be eligible.

It was late, no doubt. Interference.

I didn't believe physical retaliation would work against Wilson until Gudbranson actually did it and it worked. Trick is finding I guy who can do that but still play reasonably well.
- Tojo.

Physicality is a double-edged sword IMO. You're never going to pound teams in submission on a regular basis. Yes, you will steal wins that way, but all things being equal, if you have better players you will win more.

I don't think teams should shy away from adding a physical element to their teams, and I'm not against adding a player or two who play with a physical edge as long as that's not their only thing, but I think bringing in players for the sole purpose beating one team, one player or to have a "deterrent" is going to be a failed conquest.

Tom Wilson didn't beat the Pens yesterday. Yes, he was a key player in the Caps win, but I went back and watched some of the first and second. The Caps had a territorial advantage most of the game. Did they play physically harder than the Pens? Yes, but that has nothing to do with their personnel being bigger and stronger. They simply played a more aggressive game. An all around better game.

The better team won last night.

The Pens lost last night for four main reasons:

1) They couldn't sustain pressure when they had possession
2) Reverted back to their old PP ways
3) Made costly mistakes
3) A little bad luck

1) They aren’t very good

This NHL is so soft. Ryan Wislon is a huge part of the problem in this league, advocating against physicality being in hockey...and don't deny it, he is definitely against physical hockey. Crosby's emergence was the beginning and continuation of the boring on ice play that is today's NHL.
- eabrenner

Watching Crosby play is definitely not boring if you like highlight reel plays. Obviously you’re just a troglodyte that wants to see violence Instead of the game of hockey.

Wilson’s hit was definitely late and deserved to either be a 2 min or 5 min penalty depending on if you think he intends to hurt someone. Fortunately jankowski is 6’4” because if he was 5-6” shorter that would of been a head shot, a suspension, and a concussion.

Im all for whatever the game is going to be as long as it is called evenly across the nhl and is called every time. If you want to get rid of head shots then severely punish those who do it. If late hits are something that needs to be removed then punish everyone who does it. Set the standard, enforce it, be consistent. That’s it. Everything else will adapt to the rules set.

I think physicality makes a difference in the playoffs. 4-7 games of Dillon crushing you in the corner. Same with wilson on the forecheck. That will make people play differently. We already know Marino is soft and doesn’t like being hit. First game of the year against wash he was afraid to get hit and coughed up that goal to ovi I believe. Those two are good players though as well not just goons which is the difference between them and a lot of 4th liners or 3rd pair D. But repeatedly getting beat up on in front of nets and corners will affect the game.

We've heard this same sentiment through all the Pens cups wins of the Sid/Geno era. It's just not true.

Nah, if the Pens matched the Caps effort the first two periods they would of won. Caps wanted it more...had more reasons to want it more, really, plus they had last change. Pens record at home speaks for its self, its on the road that the the bottom 6 depth gets tested more...and it shows some nights. So when they dont have last change and come out lethargic and lifeless like they did, they usually lose. Pretty sure the "stinkers" this season have all been on the road....well they pretty much have to be as there's only one home loss.

I think they're evenly matched teams. That said, neither are getting passed Boston.

You only need a couple guys to take the punishment. Guerin. Horny. Someone to go to the net. If you’re D don’t make it hard for the opponent that doesn’t make it hard on you, just makes it easier on them. But look at the Montreal series. They wouldn’t get anywhere near their big physical. It’s not a mandatory recipe for success but it will aid the cause to have a big power forward and D who can dish it out IMO. But that being said grit isn’t worth more than skill. Hence why Wilson is such a commodity to Washington.

Boston can’t even touch NYI. They aren’t that special. Depth scoring is weak. D issues. Fortunately they have 2 great goalies.

Some teams just have their achilles heel. Isles style for some reason messes with Boston's mojo. We can only hope that if the Pens make it, the B's fact the Islanders in the first round.

I think there could have been a middle ground by calling a double minor, one for interference and the other for charging. There are two parts to the charging rule - leaving your feet and traveling a distance to make a hit. In other words, you can't line up someone for a hit from across the ice. One or the other constitutes the penalty, doesn't need to be both. This would eliminate any "intent to injure" grey area.

In fact, the game would be much better if the refs actually called the game by the rules that are on the books, namely cross-checking, so you can't gain an advantage just by two-handing some guy in the back down to the ice. Either that or don't call the retaliation if he turns around and does the same thing.

There is exactly one second expired difference between when Jankowski touched the puck, and the time Wilson hit him.

I guess that is very, very late?....or....extremely late?

Wilson had him lined up. straight ahead, had nothing but daylight and time to see he didn't have the puck. Come on. In hockey speed, yeah, that was a late hit.

When there is a late hit on a Caps player, we'll be sure to look you up and give you the time elapsed (hint: it will be one second or less).

Bottom line, this is the softest team in the league and opposing players will keep taking liberties because they know there is no downside to doing so, none whatsoever. In fact, there is a lot of upside by injuring players on a rival. It also changes momentum as it did in last night's game - the Caps were playing on their toes while the Pens were on their heels from that point on.

Sully apparently thinks this team is talented enough to win with "just play." Either that, or he is unwilling to change his tactics based on the situation. Both are damning indictments. This team is almost unbearable when they won't respond in any way. The only players who respond a little are Jarry, Malkin, Crosby and Letang. That's not good. In fact, that's disgusting.

I agree with this to an extent. However, this was a batted puck, not exactly a pass and not a situation where you expect a check that long afterward. And your beer league is irrelevant here.

Sounds good. You and the rest of the Caps fans will be losing your minds over a similar hit and will take the opposite viewpoint. And just to clarify, you don't think this was late or a penalty at all, correct?

I actually don't have much of an issue with the hit other than yes, it was late and yes, it was delivered by a scumbag who knew what he was doing and his intent was clear. As for the refs, it could have been 2, 4 or 5 minutes, but whatever.

My main issue is that the Pens are the softest team in the league and this keeps happening over and over again. I can't tell you the last player the Pens injured from a questionable hit, but I can rattle off at least 10 times the Pens were injured from a questionable hit just off the top of my head.

And I can tell you that Zucker would not have been injured if he finishes his check instead of inexplicably trying to turn away from it. And it's not just the physical outcomes, it's the mentality of it all. You are either playing on your toes or you are playing on your heels. The Pens are a collection of wimps who play on their heels and are coached to do so.

We are not even a good regular season team anymore. We are going to get destroyed in the playoffs. This team has zero chance, even if everyone is healthy.

If I can keep my head up and be aware of my surroundings and the opposition players, as a beer leaguer, I expect a "pro" should be able to do the same
