Tired players make more mental mistakes. I'm sticking with not in good enough shape. Unfortunately at his age that may mean last year was the last we'll see of Geno at that level.
- Tojo.

We're a month and a half into the season. I don't think the conditioning excuse holds water anymore. I think we need a coach who gets in players faces and/or holds them accountable. Malkin keeps making mistakes and his body language is like, "Whatevs."

I do think he probably is declining and still recovering from surgery a bit, but mentally he looks shot. The entire team mentality has been shot for a long time. Which is why we need a new coach with a new attitude.

Haha - I guess we all saw the same thing. He was late covering on the PP goal, too - left his man wide open.

I thought he was expendable last year, this year I did a 180 and thought he was someone to build around, now I'm back to thinking he's expendable haha. He provides zero offense so it's not like he can make up for bad defense from time to time (or a lot of the time more recently).

For the money... I think he kind of blows. People talk about Matheson's "awareness", I think Petts is worse....by a lot. I'll take Riikki all day over Petts.

That’s not how getting in shape works. It’s harder to get in shape in the middle of a season if you’re out of shape because you can’t dedicate weeks and weeks to conditioning training since you have to focus on practicing for games and playing the games themselves three/four times a week. There’s a big difference between getting in base shape, which is done in the offseason, and getting into game shape, which comes from playing games when you’ve already established your base conditioning. That’s why guys coming back from long injury layoffs continue to look bad for the rest of the season. They lost their conditioning and can’t get it back.

Regardless, the reason doesn’t really matter, this has been a rough season for him.

Vic covered it well already. If you enter out of shape, especially as an older player, you aren't getting it back during the season. Also being out of shape isn't an excuse.

He could very well be declining, but a year ago he was one of the best players in the league still. Shouldn't have just declined this much this fast.

If we had the center depth to do it I think the best thing the Pens could do would be to make up an upper body injury to “sideline” Geno for three weeks to a month and just have working on conditioning at the practice facility with the training staff for that duration.

If that's the case, then why is he playing? Why don't they give him a 2 or 4 week or however long "conditioning" break?

Otherwise, just trade him if he is going to be worthless this year due to conditioning. I don't want to take a chance that a 35 year old comes back and is worth his $9.5M the following year.

You beat me to it, but Blueger is outplaying him and McCann can round out the top 3 Cs. Or, after a month of seeing this, just trade him for a center.

Assuming that Blueger can keep up his scoring pace in a top 6 role and McCann can be an effective 3C just period, who the (frank) plays wing? We don’t have the bodies to do this.

What Tanev did there is exactly what Sid needs on his line. Someone to dog the puck and force turnovers

Then trade Malkin for a center (and maybe a wing). What we are doing now isn't working.

I'm not saying Blueger or McCann are 2Cs, but neither is Malkin this year.

If Malkin sucks and Letang plays like ass half the time, we have no chance.

I was hoping Kap would do more of this.
