Kevin Allen: NHL Should Not Have Settled for Being Half Right in Columbus Why didn't they remove the goal and replay the final 1:15 of the second period?

What the What?

This is so messed up. Even by NHL standards.

The PP isn't the BIG issue. The fact you let a goal stand that you determined was off-sides is ridiculous. (and yeah, correcting the PP is important too).

I'm almost disappointed Torts didn't completely lose his poop.

I didn't even know that was possible to half ass something like that.

45 seconds is taken away, but you don't remove the goal or replay the time. I've seen play restart minutes...MINUTES back because a goal was scored and they had to wait for play to be whistled before checking. Now somehow the NHL screwed up something that is not really that uncommon?

I swear sports officials have too much power or ego or something. They are there to call the game, not dictate the outcome.

This is unacceptable, they have all the technology to get it right and still got it wrong.too many people had a chance to get this right and didnt, whoever was manning the control room should be fired.brutal

It made no sense. Either fix it all or leave it all alone. I don't understand where in the rule book is says you can re-review an offside and end a penalty that was more than half completed. I doubt that was legal. Probably by the rule book, once they screwed up, they should have left it alone. If they wanted to fix it they should gave taken the goal off the board and tacked the end of the 2nd onto the beginning of the 3rd. That probably isn't legal either but as long as they decided to go rogue it would have made more sense.

They probably would of been better off by not doing anything after the mistake, but who ever made the decision to end the PP without any other action needs to go. Whether it was one person or a group...let em all go and not privately, but publicly.

I do not want the NHL to follow the footsteps of the NFL. I don't even know who won the superbowl, that's how irrelevant the NFL is to me now.

If anyone out there has a subscription to The Athletic go read the article Aaron Portzline wrote this morning after speaking with Colin Campbell last night. The story of how this all went down is absurd.

imo, NHL 'ops' and the war room (which I'm specifically calling a WAR ROOM because they don't want us to) has been an arrogant bunch of jerks for as long as I've watched the sport.

I'm not the slightest bit surprised and I'd bet money they'll have some sort of patronizing explanation coming out soon.

Haha finally a situation for Torts to meltdown and be justified in doing it but he's already burnt all his opportunities.

Even better - what if Carolina had scored in 1:15 of PP time ? Then, according to NHL rules, as soon as the puck was dropped to continue play the Jackets would be down 2 goals that shouldn't have been scored !!
Stupidity on stage. The Review room is comedic.
It was completely half-assed, not half-baked, not half-corrected, HALF-ASSED !
Just the turn of a screw by the NHL to the Jackets.

If this was indeed a decision made by only Campbell then he needs to held accountable for a ridiculous outcome. Could not have been handled any worse.

"There’s never been a goal reversed after play has resumed,” Campbell said. “I can’t recall when a penalty has been wiped out in the middle of it, either, but at this point … even though it’s the wrong procedure, I’d rather go with what’s right."

But you did not do that. Do you think we're stupid?

And a goal has been AWARDED after play had resumed. More than once actually.

"I told Jarmo I wished we could strike the goal, but there’s no precedent for that,” Campbell said.

So make one? I'm pretty sure there wasn't a precedent for the abbreviated penalty either .. just like he said, until last night.

Regardless, how do you think precedents get made?

Maybe being repeatedly punched in the face during his playing career affected his ability to make sense?

And it was documented the nhl ordered the refs to not even bother reviewing the play ....but again, the puritains would say Korpi should have never have allowed 5 goals to begin with.

If they did then they would be conflating two completely different things. But I'm pretty sure there's nobody making that mistake.

How long (by years) has the Linesman and Referees been in the League?
Just curious.

why does that matter? they're just doing what they (thought) they were told to do

Mistakes happen, the war room is supposed to catch them.

They are still in charge on the ICE, it does matter on what they see and how they control the game flow. Unfortunately there isn’t much room for mistakes at this level of play.

Now that we have the actual story of what happened, how on earth has that video technician not been fired yet? Literally a "you had one job" and they overstepped their bounds to cause the biggest not-covid black eye on the league so far this year.

If that's not grounds for sacking, I don't know what is.

This doesn't even include all the texts Ek gets from the league office. He's busier than a one armed black jack dealer.

You can't just apologize for doing surgery and leaving your watch in some poor sod's belly and call it even because you waived the cost of the surgery. You have to make things right. Or you can be an obstinate ass and refuse to acknowledge your mistake. Either way, it's better than a partial apology.

As much as I love the NHL, the fact that this got so screwed up sounds about right.
