"Do you trade your first knowing you are essentially throwing away a year of drafting? Is Kuemper worth it?"

No. Any team trading for a mediocre back-up level netminder carrying a $4.5 million salary should demand the Yotes include the first round pick.

Ek said to acquire Kuemper the Oilers would send Smith, a 2nd (which you correctly point out they don't have) and a forward prospect. He likely doesn't know the Oilers system, but maybe a Benson or Lavoie.

But this idea is nonsense. The Oilers don't have the cap space for this. And as you said Arizona doesn't want a cap dump like a Chiasson coming back. He said maybe dumping Gagner to Columbus would help, not realizing that Gagner doesn't play in Edmonton anymore. So total nonsense.

But if the Oilers moved a guy like Larsson for a 2nd, and then sent Smith + a 1st for Kuemper, you create the cap space and at least recoup a 2nd.

Strange the EK would make a post without doing the proper research. He is an insider and well respected in the hockey world. You must have your facts wrong.

Two games against an ahl level team in Ottawa and all of a sudden you think everything is great?

I would way rather have KK on the third pairing than Russell.

If Russell treated down by a goal with 3 minutes left in the third the same way as the rest of the game, I would cut him some slack. The rest of the time he can't seem to figure out a controlled zone exit.

When did I say everything is great? Things are improving as the season goes on no pre season games.

No one else had a long preseason either. All teams are just getting their legs.
