Honestly, I was disappointed by both in the last pair of games.
Nurse seems to look for a big hit here and there but doesn't do a great job clearing the front of the net. Overall he's been extremely "meh".
Bear was so horrible in the first game, he got scratched for the second one.
Oilers need to find solutions for this fast or they'll fall behind. - Scabeh
It's true. It's not a sustainable way to play. Do you remember when the Leafs made the playoffs under Carlyle, despite being clearly a team that shouldn't be in the playoffs? I can't quite recall what happened in the playoffs for some strange reason, perhaps because of the electroshock therapy, but I'm assuming we won the cup that year.
The point is that Edmonton is not that dissimilar - they produce offense off of the rush and on the power play, but don't sustain it. The Leafs won games (in 2012? 2013?) because of Kessel scoring off the rush and their power play. Everyone said it wasn't sustainable. It's just no one thought it would fall apart in 10 minutes. |

I'm glad we won. I'm not sure Freddie was really the reason. Maybe I need someone to talk me down from this, but when I watch Freddie this year and last year, here's what's missing from Freddie of 3 and 4 years ago:
1) He is rarely making a _good_ glove save and holding the puck. It will happen, obviously - he's an NHL goalie - but it's not just the absence of flash, it's the absence of it happening on a regular basis. Most of us watch more than just the Leafs. Other goalies make really hard saves more often. Yes our defense sucks. But other teams have colossal breakdowns, too, and more than half of the goalies in this league are there to back them up more than Freddie has been.
2) He is flopping far more. When we first got Freddie and he got obliterated in October (.876% / 3.76GAA), Babcock said, "He's going to have to grind out some wins." He probably through a "gud pro" in there, too. Freddie started with some desperation play and he got some lucky bounces, and somewhere in that mess he found himself and rebounded. 2016, 17 and 18 were all good. This year and last year, Freddie is back to his uncertain flopping too often. There's no conservatism of movement putting him out of position and forcing flopping, there's little rebound control, again, forcing more flopping, and it's creating a cycle of poor play in the net for him.
3) He just looks uncertain. This isn't "stare-down" Freddie. He doesn't have that look like he thinks he's going to make the save. He doesn't have the posture of "the man". I see him do good things which are fundamental to a professional goalie - he reads the play, he slides across to be in position for the one-timer, and so on, but his body position is also still very low in the net, whereas it used to be more upright. More often than not in these high danger cases, the puck hits him and he reacts, rather than him actually reading the play and saving the puck in pressure situations.
I mention these points because that's why I have less faith in Andersen. That's what I see in his game over the past 2 years that I rarely saw in the first 3. I mean, look, this is still a guy who stops more than 80% of the pucks in high danger situations, so it's easy to cherry pick a save here and there - but there's a pattern of poor play that is concerning. - Monkeypunk
#2 is the most evident to me. When he is calm, he is so much better.

All I’m saying is that yesterday was a lot more like good Freddie. The things he was doing well are the things he needs to do to be successful. Even over the “lousy” past two years we’ve seen times of both good and not good enough Freddie; too much of the latter. I don’t know what we’ll get this year but I like what I saw yesterday.

I think Holl’s progress, if it’s real, will help bring out more of Rielly’s true potential which is not as a defensive stud. Holl-Muzzin play shut down and Rielly Brodie will play more offensive minutes. That being said, I don’t think R-B are showing themselves to be a defensive liability (early days and assuming continued progress) - Canada Cup
I havent been high on holl, but i thought he had a very good game last night. |
