You are entitled to have your own opinion. I'm fine with that. not getting into a debate after 4 games.. - bixll
I kind of thought you would agree with my statement, actually.
I don't think Rielly is ever going to be a defensive stud. |

I did not say he would ever be a defensive stud. He should be good enough to make his partner better. Should be. |

Well, I'm going to knock the tennis ball back over the net with:
"I don't think Rielly is the guy to make his defense partner better in his own end. We need to give him a good partner."
Your move, Bixi. - Atomic Wedgie
I agree. I don’t think we see Reilly’s true potential until they find that solid top pairing defensive D, even if it is a true top 3 or maybe 4 guy. |

I guess my first question would be:
Did he get fired for sexually harassing a reporter, or did he get fired because the Mets realized this guy was dumb as a bag of hammers?
My guess is a little from column A, a little from column B... |

I trade candid photographs with Mz. Z, but they're not just genital closeups. These Richard pic knuckleheads have no artistry.
I think when you send one to a reporter who is covering your employer, you are trying to get fired Costanza-styles. |

I think Holl’s progress, if it’s real, will help bring out more of Rielly’s true potential which is not as a defensive stud. Holl-Muzzin play shut down and Rielly Brodie will play more offensive minutes. That being said, I don’t think R-B are showing themselves to be a defensive liability (early days and assuming continued progress) |

Apparently, we’re not allowed to take last night’s game into account or the fact that Freddie goes through periods where he is just (barely) ok to periods where he is very good. In the periods where he is very good, he looks a lot like he did last night. In the grand sample size of last night Freddie and defence were good. Time for despair - Canada Cup
I'm glad we won. I'm not sure Freddie was really the reason. Maybe I need someone to talk me down from this, but when I watch Freddie this year and last year, here's what's missing from Freddie of 3 and 4 years ago:
1) He is rarely making a _good_ glove save and holding the puck. It will happen, obviously - he's an NHL goalie - but it's not just the absence of flash, it's the absence of it happening on a regular basis. Most of us watch more than just the Leafs. Other goalies make really hard saves more often. Yes our defense sucks. But other teams have colossal breakdowns, too, and more than half of the goalies in this league are there to back them up more than Freddie has been.
2) He is flopping far more. When we first got Freddie and he got obliterated in October (.876% / 3.76GAA), Babcock said, "He's going to have to grind out some wins." He probably through a "gud pro" in there, too. Freddie started with some desperation play and he got some lucky bounces, and somewhere in that mess he found himself and rebounded. 2016, 17 and 18 were all good. This year and last year, Freddie is back to his uncertain flopping too often. There's no conservatism of movement putting him out of position and forcing flopping, there's little rebound control, again, forcing more flopping, and it's creating a cycle of poor play in the net for him.
3) He just looks uncertain. This isn't "stare-down" Freddie. He doesn't have that look like he thinks he's going to make the save. He doesn't have the posture of "the man". I see him do good things which are fundamental to a professional goalie - he reads the play, he slides across to be in position for the one-timer, and so on, but his body position is also still very low in the net, whereas it used to be more upright. More often than not in these high danger cases, the puck hits him and he reacts, rather than him actually reading the play and saving the puck in pressure situations.
I mention these points because that's why I have less faith in Andersen. That's what I see in his game over the past 2 years that I rarely saw in the first 3. I mean, look, this is still a guy who stops more than 80% of the pucks in high danger situations, so it's easy to cherry pick a save here and there - but there's a pattern of poor play that is concerning. |
