I saw some good plays from Dermott last night, dudes got quick feet. He just looks a little spazzy, cuz he’s not quite sure what he wants to, or should do, but he seems to be quick enough to figure it out. It’s all about confidence, and I think he’ll continue to smooth out his game.

Overall, I thought the Leafs did a better job with defensive positioning.

I also have a feeling every game is going to be close. Looks like this division is going to be a bit of a crap shoot. Every game is important. Lose a game, drop 4 spots in the standings.

- Woderwick

The Leafs never throw a hit in their own zone and let players stand in front of the net untouched. Positioning is great, but you need to actually hit and win puck battles.

He’s generally not fine except when he’s fine. Leafs are going to structure starts to get try to help get him there. They’re not going anywhere with Campbell who is a competent back up.
- Canada Cup

I think Campbell deserves a chance.

He has looked good in the chances he has been given and finally with an average starter in front of him he will get a chance to prove he is more than that.

We had guys playing last year that still can’t beat out Dermott and Bogo. 🤷🏻‍♂️
- Garnie

Let's not poop on Bogo too much -- he was good enough to be a starting D on the Stanley Cup champs.

I suspect Lehtonen, who I think is likely better than Dermott, isn't in the lineup because he's waiver exempt. Sandin as well.

Carrying a 3rd goalie (Dell) complicates matters as well.

Dermott averaging 11:30 TOI is pretty telling that he sucks balls and the coaching staff knows it.

That really doesn’t look good. And on top of that we didn’t have a decent backup for the most part.

Why can't we also do this?

Dell should get the next start. Then bring up Hutchinson for game 5.

A lot of argumentation here is certainly based on feelings, confirmation bias, and the lack of watching anything but Leafs games.

I think Freddie has regressed and it's getting harder and harder to shift most of the blame to team D. But yeah, team D certainly needs an upgrade... hopefully, last night's effort is a sign of things to come!

I thought Jack looked solid. Granted, it was a back-2-back game and it was the Sens but I'm hoping Campbell puts positive pressure on Freddie.

- mjones242

This is huge, and I admit I only watch a small sample size of other games. Which is why I refer to stats...its an unbiased and its based off of a large sample size. Leafs aren't the only team that has defensive breakdowns, far from it.

I challenge people to really zero in on how poor mcdcvid and dri are without the puck this week vs the Leafs. Pick their game apart like we do with AM and Marner.

Dell and spezza on waivers today
- bryant

Dell was obvious, the Robertson injury meant they could only insert Boyd as a replacement because he makes less....but Spezza? Maybe there is enough respect for the guy around the league that they wont pick him up.

Campbell had a few saves that if he let in we could of said “wasn’t his fault”

Quite frankly it doesn’t matter, it’s the goalies job to make tough saves. Watch around the league...there are 25-35 shots against a game. Some breakaways, cross creases, d mistakes. The difference is decent goalies stop a few of them.

- Santo_44

This is what people don't seem to understand. A NHL goalie's job is literally to make a save on the tough chances. If it weren't, they would all make league minimum and teams would just throw anyone in net.

AA's takes on Ander7en's goals were generous to Ander5en, to say the least. He also ignored the whiff on a dribbler that almost ended up in the net, or getting beat on the shortside by a long distance wrist shot, and the post bailed him out... or the number of times he was flopping around the ice out of position.

Ander10n is a below average starter and that is being generous. The Leafs play like they are terrified when he is in net.

Sounds like he wouldn’t report to another team. It was leafs or retirement. No one probably claims him for that reason.

I would imagine Spezza would be to open a slot on the 2nd PP.

Same here -- I just don't have the heart (or the time) to watch anything but 99% Leafs games. Gotta go with the stats and hope that I'm not cherrypicking too much to skew my own bias one way or the other.

In all fairness, Ottawa is far from a good test. Games against stronger opponents for the rest of the month will be a better litmus test. Hitting when the opportunity presents itself would be welcomed. The offense inflicting pain and suffering on the opposing goalie is the biggest factor IMO. When you get 40 to 50 shots and many quality opportunities this Leafs team should win few will talk about defense. The score flattered Ottawa last night.

I really wonder how much teams will poach players on waivers given the circumstances this year. I would not be surprised if there is an unspoken agreement there.
