How can Marner know that his poke check would "probably" result in a trip though?

I’d have to see it again.

I thought that was good when D weren’t noticed?

The rules in here get so confusing at times

He only played 9 minutes. That’s probably why I didn’t notice him.

Did he get hurt?

I see only 4 shifts each in the 2nd and 3rd... and short ones.

I think I'd rather have Sandin in there for 9 protected minutes, learning, than see more of Dermott's mediocre play.

Yeah, just looked at the TOI.
I thought he made two decent plays in the first. Wonder what’s going on? Need to spread out that ice time amongst the 3 pairs or it’s gonna be a tough go.

We can say how they played better defensively till we are blue in the face. Freddie allowed 5 goals on 24 shots for a .792 SP. Brodie looked bad, but all d-men looked bad fearing a 6 km per hour dribbler would find the five hole. He allowed 4 goals on 15 shots by the end of the second. Campbell was not spectacular just steady. Shoddy goaltending will make the defense look bad. Offense did its job, was a bit unlucky.

Campbell had a few saves that if he let in we could of said “wasn’t his fault”

Quite frankly it doesn’t matter, it’s the goalies job to make tough saves. Watch around the league...there are 25-35 shots against a game. Some breakaways, cross creases, d mistakes. The difference is decent goalies stop a few of them.

Campbell barely got tested yesterday - it's a stretch to say he had a great game.. 19 shots against and 2 goals on those -- and most shots weren't very dangerous.
not sure how campbell was a 'star' yesterday.
(and no, not saying that he should have had one of those goals -- first was on brodie and the second goal was an incredible goal by stützle).

- MaximusAurelius

Campbell was steady.

Made enough saves to win, Freddy didn’t.

Freddy will be fine. Going back to the backup in the next game is the Leaf fan move.

Yeah, I found an article about the NHL adopting Hockey USA's (or whatever it's called) tripping protocol back in 14-15.

But the rule book doesn't make that explicitly clear. A quick glance at the rule book reveals that it's riddled with poor language, ambiguity, and lack of context. I guess there's still a lot of tribal knowledge afoot that isn't codified.

Maybe so, the process of getting better and learning usually involves making mistakes and improving on those mistakes. Should Freddie lead the league in five hole goals again this season, he might think about doing something about it.

Will he? Historically he's been a very slow starter and in a compressed season, hoping he'll bounce back into some semblance of a legit top tier starter becomes slightly delusional. As Santo alluded to, legit starters are expected to make great saves and limit the amount of brutal gaffes. Freddie hasn't been legit for over a year now and it's time for Leafs mgmt to recognize it (wish I could find that 5 on 5 S% tweet that was posted).

It's Freddie's last season before UFA -- I can see the Leafs wanting to put some pressure on him and going back to the Campbell well soon enough, especially if Freddie poops the bed again on Monday.

Freddy hasn’t been fine for 70 games now.

Kinda wondering when he will be fine again...doesn’t look promising

Freddy steals so many games for the Leafs its crazy.

They play horrible defence in front of him one game, then play better the next game in front of Campbell.

The notion that he hasn't played well for 70 games is ludacris.
