When teams hire other teams ASM, you always hear about how they were the ones behind a great trade, signing, drafting etc.. you never hear about all the worthless ideas that the other teams GM rejected, or all the bad deals that the GM made on the recommendation of the ASM. Those fall at the feet of the GM. Botterill may just be a good ASM, but a lousy GM.

As for his deals, not many teams were lining up to trade for O'Reilly, and Kane was given plenty of chances but could never put it together for a complete season. I don't think many had an issue with letting him go, especially after trading for Skinner. Signing Skinner for 9m a year was far too much.

Hard to say if bott’s was good or overrated due to Rutherford being handed a cup championship team. A better example to your point would be Paul Fenton. Widely regarded as one of the best AGM in the league while he was in Nashville completely pooped the bed in Minnesota (even though I do suspect meddling going on with higher management as Guerin who was also highly touted is doing hardly better)

I’ll also add to this that the guy that’s arguably the best GM in hockey right now also got next to nothing for O’reilly. I know that doesn’t mean anything between two different GM’s but it goes to show when a players either unhappy or has attitude it’s nearly impossible to get close to fair value back.

Yeah right? Who would want to live in a beautiful temperate coastal city near oceans, mountains and every terrain in between that is consistently ranked high on any list of best cities to live in, not only in the US, but the world???

Maybe Botterill likes Rain? The only city with fewer sunny days than Pittsburgh is Seattle....
Honestly, Botterill was great when he was in Pittsburgh. I was surprised it didnt go better for him in Buffalo. One wonders if the Pegulas have created an environment where it is difficult to be a successful front office....
He was once considered one of the best GM's in waiting. Is he best suited to be a AGM? If he does well as an AGM in Seattle, he may just get another shot as a GM. If not, it will be the end of the road for him.
Just remember how quick tides can turn. People in PIT ready to erect statues to Jim Rutherford in 2017... Now some are ready to run him out after a series of poor signings and trades---ALL POST BOTTERILL...
