I feel ok about Smith being on our 3rd pair. So, if they feel one of the kids is a noticeable improvement over him, that’s a positive.
As for up front, wow, does Mika being out ever show how thin we truly are at center.

I know this season is practically a throw away one considering its 50 games, we're carrying 13 million in dead space from our buyouts and we are projected to be the youngest team by a full year behind Ottawa's lineup..... but seeing the lineup without Zib and a 3rd line of LaF - Fil - Gaut really shows how green our center depth/team is.

We really could have benefitted from picking up a league minimum Vet Center this offseason

In other interesting news.... TBL signed Boo Nieves to a PTO. They also signed Sean Day earlier in the Summer. They love our players

They made no secret that they were not going to sign anyone other than Johnson. When pressed early on JD said, “big picture” when asked about why no one was being brought in. Especially, in view of the conference realignment this year.

This season is about learning who was a draft mistake, and who is not. I just hope it doesn’t have too much of an adverse effect on the breadman, and eventually Zib.

Just remember guys, the Opening Night roster usually is NOT the roster you finish the season with. There will be trades, youngsters will surprise and disappoint, and teams that get off to a slow start may become unexpected sellers...

I still think Tony D and Strome could be traded at the deadline. If the team is out of it and they are both playing well, having another year of control on their contract could really help the rangers in getting a better return

Jan,

Hope you and the wife have a quick recovery!! I was in the ICU a couple weeks back with an acute pulmonary embolism and thought I was going to die. Doctors have no idea why it happened and that COVID test is really unpleasant.

I would have gone after Mikko Koivu or Brassard. Especially at the expense of sending 1.5 million Jack Johnsons way. I still would throw 750k-1million at Brian Boyle maybe

Neither move the needle at all for me, to be honest. Maybe I am wrong, but don't think either would be effective on the third line, let alone second if needed.

There was once a blind man who had so fine a sense of touch that, when any animal was put into his hands, he could tell what it was merely by the feel of it. One day the cub of a wolf was put into his hands, and he was asked what it was. He felt it for some time, and then said, "Indeed, I am not sure whether it is a wolf's cub or a fox's: but this I know -- it would never do to trust it in a sheepfold."
Evil tendencies are early shown.

I’m not saying we’re doomed because we didn’t pick up a Vet Center (I think the point is to get rookies playing time in this shortened/throwaway season anyway) but our Center depth is definitely weaker than any other position.... especially compared to LHD.... But for some reason we felt the need to throw money at Jack Johnson and Bitetto over the summer when we have 2 NHL caliber LHD (Lindgren & Smith) and about 4 rookies to take that last LHD spot.

We literally have 4 Centers and then Barron & Blackwell for backup. That’s horrendously thin.

Plus, you could always flip a Koivu, Boyle or Brassard at the TDL... good luck flipping JJ or Bitetto.

My feeling is that JD and Gorts know what they are doing. They are paying JJ for exactly one season. Might not that be because they feel we have the answer of the future in the organization already? More than that, I would think they are confident that we have the answer and the back up plan in the organization. I may be wrong, but not much else makes sense.

Signing Jack Johnson is going to completely derail this season, its obvious he is going to be playing at least 30 minutes a game. We don't have a chance this season.

Come on Guys - Johnson and Bietto are stop gaps. They didnt have money to spend this year, they didnt cost all that much and the defense market was crap. They also didnt want to just hand the D prospects a spot. They have to at least beat out below average to make the team. I would have liked Koviu but he would be our 4th line center

I have seen Jack Johnson's name about one thousand more times than I have seen Alexis Lafreniere's name and it just makes me bonkers

As an Eagles fan, I can honestly say, "meh."
Commentators were all over them about not going full out for a win. At 4-10-1!!!!! Who gives a (frank) about a win in week 17? Want to see them lose, no. Give a poop about the difference between 4 wins and five? Also no.
My dream scenario would've been to see the Cowboys win earlier in the day and then an Eagles win to hand the division (and a worse draft pick) to Dallas.
Hate that team like no other.

Not negative. I am so very excited to watch this team this season!! My comment was solely about how Zib being out of the line up shows with absolute clarity that center is our most significant weakness.
I want no stop-gap measures this season. Just play the games the best we can and see who is developing and who might not be a part of the future. Then, be absolute contenders in 2021-22 and onward!!!!
