Agree with it all except the Goaltending point. I think Smith will have had enough time to get his arms around his groin injuries. Could be a big year for him.

The way you frame things when it comes to Nurse speaks to a problem with your analysis or a bias against the player.

Nurse already plays among the most in the league at 5-on-5 so I'll assume you mean he struggles when forced into top PP minutes alongside his already egregious minutes. Would be curious if the numbers support that claim. I'll look into it.

He's a solid top pairing guy at even strength. Outscored relative to his team when he's off-ice, produces offense, doesn't get caved in flow of play. The team struggles when Klefbom is out because the team has a hole in their top-4 that isn't filled, not because Nurse isn't good enough.

Barrie had an off year as well. What people need to remember, is in that one shortened season, he still notched 39 points (which is better then every roster'd D on the teams career high!!!!! other than the one year Nurse put up 41) . Klefbom was always underwhelming for me to watch.

I do think Turris and Kahun bring this team a legitimate 3 threatening lines as well. Something that they haven't had.

As for goaltending, stop starting Smith!!!! Koskinen is the better tendy, and needs to be tested more. I know everyone had their heart set on Markstrom, but I really think Kosk needs a fair shake to show that he is a legitimate 1G.

Groin injuries are hard to overcome from when you're young, when you're knocking on 40's door it's even tougher. For his sake and Oiler fans sake I hope he has fully recovered but don't hang your hat on it!

Don’t hang my hat on his groin? Gotcha.

Don't think the pk will regress as much as you think. Still think it'll be a top 5 pk. You underestimate Khaira's capabilities on the pk imo. Legit boss on the pk.

Is the sophomore slump really a thing or just a stereotype? Any stats to back up the sophomore slump claim? Do second year players commonly trend down from their first year?
Just asking...

He played on a second unit and did do a good job but consistency has always been an issue with Khaira and he simply may not be good enough to be in the lineup every game.

Personally I think it’ll fall out of the top 10.

A good job would be an understatement imo. Looking at his pk numbers compared to the rest of the league, he did extremely well. The following article goes into the numbers pretty well.

https://oilersnation.com/...ujhar-khaira-this-summer/

It also highlights that issues concerning consistency are mainly due to his 5v5 play which is lackluster, to say the least. Limiting his 5v5 time (offensive zone; forechecking/grinder playstyle) and prioritizing his role in the pk is what should be done moving onwards.

His 5-on-5 time is about as limited as it can get without straying into ridiculous territory. At that point, you're better icing someone who can play effective 5-on-5 minutes and be a net neutral on the PK. The league is beyond having specialists with limited or negative 5-on-5 ability. We need a 4th line we can rely on to play a good 10 minutes/night unsheltered. Whether that's Neal-Khaira-Chiasson or Nygard-Haas-Archibald doesn't matter to me.

Sean is correct to raise the point that 2nd unit minutes are generally easier as they see fewer def zone starts and thus fewer opportunities for the opposition to start with the zone already established.

100% agree with this. Not because Sheahan is particularly big loss or anything, but because the goalies- particularly Smith- aren't likely to post the 4-on-5 sv% they did last year. I don't foresee it dropping to the bottom half, but I can see an average PK, a drop in the PP (still top-10), and a step up at 5-on-5 leading to an overall dip in standing position and a bubble team.

Nuge- McDavid- Kassian
I predict McDavid normalizes defensively now that the offensive burden isn't solely on him and he completely focuses of rounding out his game. Kassian is a defensive burden but Nuge can support the defensive effort. Puljujarvi jumps up if he shows well. ~56% GF.

Kahun- Draisaitl- Yamamoto
This trio won't be nearly as effective as the one last year, but still quality 2nd line territory. Kahun and Nuge will swap from time to time when either line runs cold or if Tippett decides to trust in chemistry to get him on a run. ~52% GF.

Ennis- Turris- Puljujarvi
I predict they allow the same amount of goals that Sheahan's 3rd line did last year (maybe even a few more) but score substantially more as well to bring it closer to even. ~45% GF.

4th line is whatever combination of 3 guys can most effectively keep things close at 5-on-5 while also contributing on the special teams. If I had to make a choice, I'd go with Haas-Chiasson as the default as both are low-event. At LW, I sub-in Neal or Archibald based off opponent and specific need. Quine is the extra F followed by Nygard.

Top-5 PP, lower-middle of the pack PK, and below average goaltending (Koskinen average, Smith well below).

Which I’m gonna guess will be Nygard-Haas-Archibald.

My dear pig friend.

Yes,

Hell is currently freezing over.

The apocalypse is Nigh.

I believe the the first rider of the apocalypse has already arrived. That would be Greta Thunberg. She is here to make us repent with the climate change.....hell freezing over as you put it.

It is time that you learned about the second horse......the following is a quote from the Bible.

When the Lamb opened the second seal... Another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other. To him was given a large sword.

Let me break that verse down for you.

War is the second horse, a red horse...known as Blasty (his return is fitting).....and with him comes war......(or the battle of Alberta).....we can expect bench clearing brawls. And as far as the whole sword thing goes I am guessing JG starts using a longer stick......because I don't think his sword is as long as Nurse's.

Anyways, as I am not really a Christian I am learning a lot tonight.

The bible has called it!!!!! This year we finally get the BATTLE OF ALBERTA!

:love
Anyways, the apcolypse is here. McJesus is going down. JG who is from Hell, also known as Jersey, is going to be the new King.

Nobody knows. A couple years ago the experts were predicting that the Oilers would win the cup and a year after that they miss the playoffs again....and they were completely wrong. The fan should are even dumber. You guys could make 10 predictions about the Oilers and each one has a 50/50 chance of being right.
