More likely the Rangers trade Buch and protect Strome, particularly if Strome has another productive year this season. He would have some trade value if Chytil steps up to assume the 2C role at some point during the upcoming season.

it certainly depends on what happens this coming season

but I envision if the Rangers actually do trade Buchnevich, along with all the money they have coming off the books with the buyouts and Brendan Smith, they'll go hard after a real #2 center next summer and still hope Seattle takes Ryan Strome

the trade value for Ryan Strome was virtually not existent at the draft and the Rangers desperately tried to drum sum up

Bitter tears from an Oilers fan?
Maybe consider he just became a better player once he got out of Edmonton.

It’s reasonable to say strome will regress on a different team. That said he’s also the type of player that made Vegas successful in their first year.

1 year left on a contract that if he doesn’t pan out and seattle projects to miss the playoffs they can probably retain half his cap and trade him at the deadline. On the flip side he’s good enough to be a decent middle six center or if seattle has the Vegas effect he may have a career year in a number 1 role.

While that’s about as likely as it was for Vegas’s entire roster to have a career year (it wasn’t). It’s the kind of bet you have to make when building an expansion team, with the exception of fluery Vegas’s roster was supposed to be awful. They had success due to players stepping up and playing above their role. While strome’s success in NYR may have more to do with his line mates he also proved he could step up when needed.

If they drop Strome to the Kraken the 2021-2022 roster will have almost 18m in cap space just on expiring buyouts and Strome. Thats enough to bring Zib back on a long term deal and bring in some help to get the team to the next level. Things are really looking up.

It's unlikely that he'll regress playing with Panarin again, and he will have trade value down the stretch to another team with talented wingers. Whether he regresses with another team is not the Rangers' concern, just get something of value for him. Exposing him to Seattle and letting them flip him to a team that needs a 2C or 3C is poor asset management.
