Hopefully for you guys either or both of Lagesson and Broberg can step in and handle big minutes. Barrie-Larsson and Nurse-Bear is a pretty awful top 4. Just my opinion. Thinking Barrie replacing Klefs minutes while he’s out is funny.

I see so many oilers fans pumping Holland’s tires when all he did was add bargain bin players and pretend the blue line is adequate.

The same Defence that allowed 2 more Goals Against in 1 more Game Played then the vaunted Flames Defence. LOL

Get F ucked. Losing Klefbom will hurt; no doubt. But he wasn’t and isn’t the Oilers best defender from 19-20.

In my opinion, you’re an idiot.

It’s not the same defense. Klefbom being absent for at least half the season and having Barrie replace his minutes is obviously a huge difference. Barrie (frank)in’ sucks

You're right, it is a huge difference. Barrie consistently outscores his opposition at 5-on-5 relative to his team while Klefbom consistently does the opposite. Team-relative on-ice goal share #s follow:

Year___Klefbom__Barrie
19-20:__-3.87____-1.60 (+7.47 after Babcock's firing)
18-19:__-9.03____+4.73
17-18:__-7.03____+5.26
16-17:__-2.35____+2.96
15-16:__+2.56____+3.05

There's certainly a difference in deployment to consider, but Barrie also won't be deployed in the same manner that Klefbom was so comparing them outright is folly.

Barrie's addition all but guarantees there won't be a 3rd pairing playing less than 13mins a night like in recent years. In theory, this ought to mean a more equal distribution of minutes across the pairings and less of a burden on the top-4. Even if you and Leafs fans are correct in calling Barrie a 3rd pairing Dman, there's plenty of value to extract from a "3rd pairing Dman" that played and outscored in first 1st pairing minutes at even strength (18:05/night post-Babcock).

It comes down to whether Barrie is more of an improvement on RD than Jones is a downgrade on LD.

If mgnt knew Klef would be LTIR why would they let Benning walk?

Because the success he had was in a role that wouldn't exist anymore: sub-13min 3rd pairing Dman.

Whether Klefbom was to be out or not, they likely wanted a shift in deployment to a more "by-committee" approach where they weren't forcing both top-4 units to play top pairing-level minutes. If they can get their three pairings closer to 21-21-18 minutes respectively, it likely eases the burden on the top-4.

Perhaps its possible that Benning could've played enough minutes to play that role but it wasn't a guarantee and, if the plan involved adding Barrie all along, Benning wasn't going to see that role anyway.

Man, I watched Barrie fvck up so much last year. You can extrapolate what you want from a 70 game season, but his numbers get sub-par when he wasn’t playing with Reilly.

That really became apparent in the final stretch before the shut down. You’re free to take a look for yourself. Barrie got tried out with every defenseman after Reilly went down and the results were middling at best.

Moneypuck is a cvnt to export, but you can use the link and search up the Leaf’s defensive pairings last year.

Can't say I've used Moneypuck much, but I've done a lot of scrounging through the numbers on NaturalStatTrick and have seen enough of Barrie during his time in Colorado to feel relatively comfortable in my stance.

On the one hand, I can look at his TOI with Muzzin and Sandin and see a lot to be desired. On the other, I can look at his TOI with Reilly and Dermott and see enough to feel positively.

On the one hand he struggled mightily under Babcock and hit some bumpy roads later in the year. On the other, his time post-Babcock overall was good and time on two offensively-focused pairings were objective positives.

He's a weapon that needs a coach that understands his strengths and deploys him in-line with those strengths. He's definitely the kind of player I imagine gets eaten alive during the playoffs, but his regular season results seem like they'll help- especially in the absence of Klefbom.

Guess we’ll see! That’s the fun part about making bold claims in the off-season. One either eats sh!t on it or strolls back in here trying to bring up an interaction that no one remembers. Good hearing from you again.

In all honesty I could see you guys making the playoffs if there is a shortened season. The Oilers usually start off playing well. Smith will have had time to let his groin heal too.

Agreed, we'll see

In fairness to your point, I agree that if the team expects Barrie to step into the same role Klefbom had, it won't go well. However, if they go in the direction I mentioned in another post (more or less "by committee defense"), then I think they'll do fine.

At worst, the team has a whole lot more offensive ability this season and should be more fun to watch as a result!

It will be interesting to see some of the additions sink or swim. Being an Oilers fan has to be a mindfvck sometimes. Strome just re-signed for 4.5x2 in New York. Wtffff

The thing about Holland's additions are none of them have contracts that are going to kill us.
