From last thread:

It was never going to make financial sense to buyout Neal this season, it makes even less sense to do so in a year that will likely be a shortened season where we aren't yet sure exactly how the games will unfold. Buying out Neal this season costs the team just over 1.9 million a year over the next six years. Waiting even one more year knocks that number down to 1.9 million over four years.
- Sean Maloughney

How does it not make financial sense? You can say you're not keen on it, but it makes plenty of sense.

Cap difference;
+3.8, +3.8, +3.8, -1.9, -1.9, -1.9
0.0, +3.8, +3.8, -1.9, -1.9, 0.0

It's either get an extra 3.8mil this year and try to extort a team that's desperate (along the lines of Schmidt out of Vegas) at the cost of one extra year of 1.9mil down the line or not take advantage of the unique market conditions in order to save that extra year of 1.9mil 5 years from now (when all other dead cap would be off the books).

RIP Joey Moss, you were a great ambassador for the Oilers and Eskimos. I might be a Flames fan but I was born in Edmonton and saw you when I was young when I actually cheered for the Oilers before they traded the great one.

Joey was the man. It’ll be strange not seeing him around the ice or field. Edmonton legend with the rings to prove it. It’s a sad day

Pretty sad day. As a young man growing up on the East Coast who was old enough to stay up and watch all the West Coast games in the 90’s I/we always saw Joey at all the games and heard the story.

Rest In Peace Joey.

i'm an east coast guy, a rangers fan, so dont see many games in edomonton and cant recall noticing him. i thank you for sharing this tribute. I have a friend with a son who has downs syndrome and he is possibly the happiest kid ever. never stops smiling. its really opened my eyes up to this genetic ailment, they're just people like the rest of us, just a bit different and deserve love and friendship.

separate story, there's a young man, 20 with DS who is aiming to become the first athlete with downs syndrome to complete an ironman. he is racing at ironman florida next week, and has been a shining light in the ironman community that i am a part of this year.

i hope the oilers acknowledge him with a patch or something on their jersey this year

Condolences to Joey's family, the Oilers and their fan base. He was truly a bright light every time I saw him - always smiling. I am a Flames fan - so I have to hate the Oilers, but I respect the Oilers organization for treating Joey with such class over the years and also Gretzky for bringing him into the fold.

RIP

Rest in peace Joey. Never knew him, but knew of him from the occasional glimpses at hockey games. That man had so much passion for the sport. The Prima Donna players looking for the big bucks should take a long hard look at what true passion for the game is.
Rest well, Joey, and respect and condolences to your family.

Great tribute, Sean.

He'd always be so happy. Cynical, younger me thought it was some sort of gimmick but I came to appreciate his happiness and earnest support for the team as I got older and softened a bit. RIP, Joey.

RIP. He was a class act. Kinda the last remnant left from the glory days. Hope they do a special tribute to him next season.

Joey will be an Oiler forever. It's going to be bloody weird when hockey comes back and he isn't there. Not having the Joey Moss Cup last year was weird, but I never thought to read anything into it - thought it was just more Oilers heavy handed dealings with U of A. Rest in peace Joey.

There have been a lot of guys who you could say have been the 'heart of the team' at one time or another, but Joey was the heart of the franchise for decades.

Someone point me to the change.org/gofundme/whatever campaign to get a Moss jersey retired.
