If we can find a way to sign Kahun or Granlund, that'd go a long way in bolstering our forward depth and potentially increasing our secondary scoring.

Sean Maloughney: The Best of The Rest My knee jerk reaction was to lambaste the move but looking at it deeper it makes sense, looking forward at Seattle Expansion.

One point of note though is that Kris Russell today is no better or worse than he was four years ago when he was given a 4x4 contract by Peter Chiarelli. His 1.25 million dollar deal for next season fits far better with what he is able to bring to the team and once again shows how terrible Chiarelli was at his job.

100% Agreed. The Russell signing is actually not that bad once factoring in the expansion aspect. A further look into Russell's advanced numbers also indicates that if he is put in a sheltered 3rd pairing role, his output matches the contract extension given. Issues arise once he is put in a top 4 role and relied on heavily. All in all, it gives us some veteran depth especially with Klefbom out.

It'll be interesting to see how the defensive corps will look like with Klefbom out. For once, Edmonton has a plethora of options to choose from (LHD and RHD). Still disappointed in that we couldn't keep Bennings though.

Hoffman is an interesting case as I think he would definitely be an asset to pursue, but with our current cap situation I don't think he is a prime target the Oiler's can actually pursue, hence why Sean may have left him out.

If we go by the Dadonov signing (comparable output), Hoffman could go for 5.5-6m on a short term or 5m on a long term. Definitely not something the Oilers could afford, unfortunately.

Unless we shed some salary or if he is okay with going for less, I don't see us pursuing him.

Even then, I honestly would rather pursue Kahun or Granlund over Hoffman. Not saying Hoffman is bad, but with the options available, I'd rather go after different options due to age, playstyle, and cap based reasons.

Realistically, neither Granlund nor Galchenyuk are possible. Even taking a haircut, either would be closer to $3m than $1m. Even with Klefbom gone for the season (not guaranteed), Bear needs a bridge deal at minimum. Nurse got $3.2m last time, so Bear would get at least $2-2.5m for two years. That's not enough.

If Kahun was not getting offers, he would have circled back by now. Duclair is about the best remaining option.

Now that Russell has a new deal, he won't be going anywhere, except maybe the AHL. Seattle is not going to claim him. Good value signing, but his cap for the current year is the killer.

Granlund may command those dollars, but if Galchenyuk wants another opportunity in the NHL, he's probably going to have to settle for something in the million (max) range. A lot of other players with better numbers (and lesser opportunities) have had to take considerably less.

Unless Oilers opt to attach draft assets to the player(s), you're probably right.

The question for Oilers management is whether or not saving a couple million to add a decent piece (Granlund, perhaps?) at the expense of draft pick(s)/ position is worth it . . . (?)

If I'm Holland, I don't sweeten anything more than say this example:

Chiasson and 3rd Rounder to Ottawa for a 5th Rounder.

All these potential bargains really drives home how valuable the 3.8mil from Neal's buyout could've been for giving this team that extra little kick it needs.

It was never going to make financial sense to buyout Neal this season, it makes even less sense to do so in a year that will likely be a shortened season where we aren't yet sure exactly how the games will unfold. Buying out Neal this season costs the team just over 1.9 million a year over the next six years. Waiting even one more year knocks that number down to 1.9 million over four years.

I would never make a trade like that, we are weak on young players and already don't have a 2nd round draft pick next year

Well there you go then. If you're Oilers brass you stick with Chiasson for 1 more year. His value is as little to the rest of the league as it apparently is to the Oilers (or their fans, anyhow). No one is taking $$ unless it's oh so sweet to do so.
