Its a great trade for the panthers. Hornqvist has a lot left in the tank.

Panthers won. Horn is a solid veteran role model who can keep the guys accountable. I doubt he cracks the top 6, but shedding that bad Matheson contract was well worth it. Winner in these deals is the team that gains financial freedom.

How many more demonstrations of incompetence are needed before the Pens show JR the door? His days of getting Cups out of his rosters are apparently long over.

Ek reported this was a deal made by 2 strong GM's.

Rutherford isn't strong at all.

Zito just took the job so there is not much to judge him on. He probably forgot and thought Tallon was still there.

Just out of curiosity what happened to matheson. It didn’t seem like that long ago he was breaking into the league and people were saying he was going to be a top pair guy.

That is what JR is hoping for but it could be another JJ acquisition. I think they will miss Hornqvist just like they missed Kessel. JR is ready for the old folks home.

Kessel has considerably slowed down and was traded at the exact right time (would have been better a year earlier TBH). To get POJ and an expiring contract (Galchenyuk) was a huge win. Nobody wants Kessel @6.8 Million right now

Moving Hornqvist was an equally well timed move (would have been better just to not give him the extension 2 years ago TBH)

The offense Hornqvist produces (mostly just PP goals and points) will be replaced mostly by whoever takes his place there

The only 5v5 points he produces are with Crosby or Malkin. Horn isn't in the Top6 anymore, so unless he was going to tear it up with McCann and Simon/Tanev on the 3rd line then the lost offense is moot. He doesn't produce 5v5 when out of the Top 6

The mistake with Kessel was not getting rid of him a year or two earlier. They will miss Hornquist though.

I could actually see Matheson working out and being an ok value for his contract if all goes well.

If he can manage to good value for Murray and dump off JJ at not too prohibitive of a cost, we might be in decent shape entering the season.

While he has made a lot of questionable moves since the last cup, I'm willing to let him complete his offseason plan before taking him out behind the shed.

Hmmmm..Exchanging an aging player with some life left for a more expensive boat anchor and a decent 4th liner. Hopefully for the Pens that a change of venue will be good for Matheson and he might become the player he was expected to be....Good luck to all three players....
