Carol Schram: Looking back at Horvat's hot playoffs, and forward to the buyout window Bo Horvat's playoff scoring output is standing up favourably against the best players in the postseason, and the Canucks' options for freeing up cap space through buyouts will be limited when the window opens on Friday.

I looked through all the possible buyouts last night Roussels name was the second best option but he still has trade value.

Beagle savings this year would be 1.6 mil and next year .666K and two following years of 666K. He is only owed 4.4 mil in actual money in the next two years combined less 30%. Buyout would cost 3.4. There is no actual savings . Sending him down would have higher cap relief over 2 years. In other words 2 more years of the Beagle as a Canuck

Horvat’s scoring was both timely and fun to watch this post season, however, his 2 assists in seventeen playoff games is really concerning for a center. Conversely, Brayden point may have just gotten to 11 goals in twenty games but he’s also got 17 assists to go with it, for 28 points in twenty games.

Benning would be well served to get Horvat a passing winger to get full value out of him.

I was stoked to see Bo do as well as he did this post season but I have to agree with that point. There was something about watching him that felt like he was always on the brink of disappearing offensively.

But then again, based on his history, he will be spending his offseason addressing exactly that concern.

There are 274 RFAs this year and a lot of teams won't be able to make qualifying offers because of the flat cap . This is where you want to go poaching and make up for a teams bad contracts.

That won't be an easy task for JB & Co.

Him and Pearson are similar in their rush/shot first mentality. Nothing wrong with that, they just need someone to compliment them. I don't think Brock is that guy, though.

Like PacG said, getting him a passing winger would be ideal.

I said it a few times I expect a new 3 C a new 2RHD and a new bottom 6 guy. I think all of that is easy to do with the cap space we have.

This is where the conundrum starts for Jim Benning, if he committed say 11 million dollars to Markstrom and Toffoli, most of Virtanen, Motte, Stecher, Gaudette, MacEwen, Brisbois and Bailey could be poached because he wouldn’t have any money left to qualify them.

Too much money for bottom six forwards has tied his hands.

How are the Marky contract talks going?

There are too many other good goalies so why would you want to lock into 6 mil a year long term for Markstrom?

I also doubt Tanev is coming back unless he signs for about 3 mil? Lots of players will be looking for new contracts this year

If you want to go into nighthawk territory and keep Brock up there:

JTM - Petey - TT
Hoglander - Bo - Boeser
Pearson - Gaudette/trade - ZacMac

Exactly my point, he probably wants to re-sign them but he can’t. Thus his hand is being forced by his own doing.

That's assuming JB doesn't make any trades to get rid of contracts, which I'm sure he will do.

Also, if all the other teams can't sign their RFAs, how could they sign and poach ours?

I know this debate could go on for pages but people have got to stop thinking there is only one solution. Look at Vegas and Toronto with their horrible cap hit and are rumored to be the top bidders on a 8 mil plus Pietrangelo.

There are many ways to get the roster you want. Do you really care if you lose Jake and pick up Debrusk? I don't . I would be very surprised if you see Gaudette back as a 3 C

Letting Markstrom, your clubs MVP, walk is risky but it’s infinitely better than signing another older player to an expensive long term contract.

Tanev, not a big deal, happens all the time. Toffoli however is a double edged sword, they gave up a decent prospect and a 2nd round pick for him at the deadline. For a bubble team that’s a lot to give up if he walks away for nothing.

For the record I was for the trade, I was of the opinion the kids needed a shot at making the playoffs. But the same goes for Toffoli as it does for Markstrom, we don’t need to sign a declining 28 year old player to an expensive long term contract.

If I was Benning I’d tell them all to fcuk off and concentrate on my RFA’s and then make some trades. Not really his strength but here’s to hoping
