I'm struggling to see how we can fit his salary without moving anything out AND fill existing roster gaps.

Also I feel in recent history, 30 + year old defenseman/forward big signings have soured very quickly especially for the flames. ie Neal, Brouwer. My preference is to stay away.

Unless they move out a 6 million dollar contract for just picks, I don't see how they could get this done. Plus I don't see this helping the Monahan/Gaudreau situation. This team needs more help ie size, speed and goaltending. I don't know.. Treliving definitely better be GMing like his job depends on it. This move will only impress me if it's one of many to improve this team exponentially...

I think I read 8.0 mill was the number St Louis & Piet were at but Piet wanted max bonus payments & Blues wanted no part of that. Tre would need to get permission from ownership for that big of capital out lay. Easy for Leafs to do but Flames, that may be easier said than done. If by miracle we did land Piet, I would bet $$$ Hanifin is moved for futures. Valimaki would be moved up to play with Andersen & Gio & Piet would be top pairing. Not impossible to do if ownership are willing to write a few cheques.

I don't see any way they fit his salary into the roster while also filling the other holes. They have 2 empty fwd spots, 2 empty D spots, 1 empty goalie spot plus needing to sign Mang and Kylington. Where is this money coming from

I don’t think he’d come to Calgary but if he wanted to we let Brodie and Hammer walk and we have 9M!

Who knows where he's going, but it won't be Calgary or the Calgary section of the next bubble.

The only way he's playing for Calgary is if Treliving is willing to give him $80 million.

There’s been soooo many continuous years of seeing other teams picking up big names, while the Flames never put any attempt....I know it’s still early and there’s been nothing finalized as of yet but damn it sure feels good (and even refreshing...) to hear day after day that BT is really getting dirty with a lot of big names out there....I have a huge gut feeling that this is the year that BT is gonna land some huge names by both free angency and with a trade or two...
This is gonna be a huge offseason🤞🏻😉😎
We need a shake up and there’s a lot of big names out there that can definitely get it done!!!
Just don’t see it being AP

So, there is roughly 16m available cap, with 4D on the roster. Mackey and Kylington would eat up close to 2m. That leaves 14m for Mangiapane and 4 other positions + goalie. Markstrom would eat up 5.5m and Mangiapane 3.5, leaving 10.5m. At the very least you would have to consider moving Ryan for a pick or prospect. Would be tight, but you could fill with players like Gawdin, Buddy, Phillips, etc. Not a great 4th line, but hopefully responsible.

The other option of course is to trade Hanifin and move up Valimaki to start taking more minutes. I get that he has few NHL games under his belt, but he showed to be NHL ready last playoffs. Hanifin could be traded for a minor reduction in salary on the wing.

Personally - I think it's doable. I think it's also a little crazy to invest $17M in two 30+ dmen, one of which has maybe another season or two playing at top pairing levels. It would be a "save my job" type signing for sure.

If we're dealing Hanifin away, I'd rather put Piet and Valimaki together on the 2nd pairing and have Gio Ras as the top pair this year.

In terms of moving Hanifin, I'd then be looking for something in the 1st round at the draft. Forgo an NHL'er in return and restock the farm and look at free agency to round out the roster. Prices for mid-tier players are likely to take a massive hit and/or be short term deals with a flat cap scenario for the next couple of years. You can live with the current goaltending situation if your defence is also a little bit better.

Just don't want a Karlsson albatross sitting here for the next few years, which makes me wonder about the term moreso than the price.

All these rumours. What’s every bodies opinion on what this team needs to add the most during free agency?
Mines a goalie and I hope it’s Markstrom, great addition plus it screws a rival.
Let’s here it.

Granlund played great against us this season. Not a big ticket pickup, but I’d be happy with it.

Also, Brenden Dillon would be a nice fit. Could get both guys for the price of Pietrangelo.

If those 2 cost $9M, I'd be pretty choked. Wouldn't mind them here, but not at more than say $5M total - Granlund regressed quite a bit this year in terms of his production, and Dillon is a big tough stay at home guy, but I wouldn't be paying much there either.

These mid-tier type guys and I think those are the ones that will get crushed in FA this year.

If I was ownership BT would not be given the authority to trade away any "core" players. If BT decides to retool now it would be an admission that he was wrong and wasn't able to make the right moves over multiple seasons as the teams GM.

His only option to keep his job would be to win now by adding to the core that he created. Anything short of a deep playoff run (WCF+) is a failure of a season and would spell the end of BT's tenure.

The new GM would be responsible for trading Johnny and co---BT shouldn't get that right IMO.

I have more faith in BT pulling the trigger on a trade than the unknown. Thank Christ Feaster is gone, his trades of Iggy & JBO were horrendous. I think Ownership would be telling Tre to stay the fck away from signing UFA's. Thats his achilles heel.

How many years has Tre been GM & how many years has Flames made the playoffs. Hardly a record to put the GM on a short leash & punted out the door. That decision should have been made last year when they extended his contract. Seems to me Ownership are fine with the job Treliving is doing, despite what some fans may think.
Just my opinion of course.
