To be honest, I'm not sure if Hyman will be worth his next contract. I like him a lot but I think the Leafs can probably find a cheaper alternative.
I doubt Sandin and Liljegren will see significant pay increases in the next few years. If they do end up deserving it, that's a great problem to have.
Rielly is definitely a big question mark.
There may be opportunities to go with a 1a/1b goaltending tandem on the cheap. Presumably, if the team is playing more defensively responsible, and you have a monster top pairing, you won't need Georges Vezina in net. (it's also one of the reasons I really, really want the Leafs to draft Askarov...)
I'm thinking I'd rather have Petro than 2 middle pair(ish) d-men who are probably going to be paid too much with too much term and may demand a NMC/NTCs that handicap your ability to move them. - mjones242
Good post, I also like Hyman but really depends on price. I think if the opportunity to get Pietrangelo is there, you go for it. Getting some picks and prospects to create cap space will also be great. Askarov would be excellent, but I doubt he's there at #15.

Babs just didn't like Dubas... I recall Babcock not being a fan of the Muzzin trade either - PatC80
I think Dubas replacing McElhinney with Sparks is what pissed Babs off the most. But that's just my guess. Babs and Dubas were never on the same page. |

I think if the Leafs do land Pietrangelo, (it would be great) then they can put together a trade package for another RHD. Like Johnsson and Andersen for Pesce..

I can't see Askarov getting past Carolina at #13. He may go sooner even. |

yeah that too. Although, Babs didn't really play McElhinney unless he was 'forced' too on a back-to-back |

Leafs would likely have to take Mrazek back if the Canes are getting Freddy. |

Naw, Carolina won't draft a goalie. They'll trade for Andersen or Kuemper |

Johnsson is coming off injury. I don't know if the Canes would want him or not. Would he get along with all those Finns? 😂 |

Yeah but he did score 20 goals the year before... Also, I don't think Aho or Teravainen would avoid passing the puck to him. |

I don’t want 2 middle pair types. I want one top pair guy who costs less than $9M or $8.5M. I want someone who can give us responsible defensive play and all those things but still leaves us some room. Whether it’s Hyman or Rielly or Lehtonen, it’s everybody and everything. Nobody’s gone through a stalled cap before and I’m not convinced that the difference between Pietrangelo and the next best guy is worth being so constrained for the foreseeable future.

It's projecting that Pietrangelo will not age well, has him below average for 6 seasons.. I don't know how I feel about that. - PatC80
that is the average of all the D above.
its a list of D who have aged very well. if he is going to hang with those comps to age 36....umm thats great

Tampa have ONLY 3 D men signed for next year..... Not good. they have just over 5 mil to spend. Maybe some mid pay guys would be the way to go.
Who knows. |
