Even with sending Hanifin the other way, I really don't see how the Flames would be able to fit both of them under the cap AND have enough space to resign everyone + make the team better.
I also feel like the cost of acquiring both of them would seriously deplete the team elsewhere. |

If OEL was a UFA today I would peg him at the same value as Brodin (7x6mil) and OEL has 7 years remaining at 8.25 mil. If Arizona are willing to retain 2.25x7 years its worth considering but I would still be leery about that 7 year term. |

It's even worse than that, when you look at what he is actually making in actual salary the next 3 years.

That is also the problem with only considering this year's actual salary, like was stated in the blog below.
Calgary – well, ownership anyways – will also like the fact that, after OEL’s bonus is paid, he’ll only make $4 million in actual dollars this season. That’s a lot more manageable during COVID when many businesses are being crushed. |

The Flames don't have what it takes to get OEL. Hanifin's value is low and their prospect pool isn't very good aside from Pelletier and Wolf. |

Let's hope not because that contract looks like a disaster waiting to happen. |

OEL is a terrible fit, and if you're paying $8M in cap space to a 2nd pairing dman, you're screwed.
Arizona would have to eat all kinds of cap space to make that happen.
Kuemper - I'd take a look at for sure - but I'd want to look at underlying stats there... Arizona played a defense first system... |

The only way any of this makes sense is if ARI is retaining part of that contract value.
Even then, it only makes sense if Hanifin is used elsewhere to improve the team.
Like trading Hanifin for a RD. Or for a top 6 RW or C.
I get that last year they expected Valimaki would be on the roster, and ended up buying out Stone and re-signing him, but if anything Valimaki should be considered for 3/4 D. Playing beside Ras. With that in mind, why would we need OEL? Sure, you can start Valimaki on the 3rd pair, but what a waste. We have Mackey for that.
Anyway, from a value perspective, what exactly would we give up for OEL? Kylington and a 2nd? Kylington and Ryan? |

OEL has negative value so they could probably manage

If Treliving wants to salt the earth for the next guy, convincing Lucic to move to the desert and throwing in a first for OEL would be one of the better short term moves he could make.
It's the type of risky move that could pay off big time. |

Stop trading picks! The flames have one of the weakest farm systems in the league from constantly trading picks for average players like elliot, smith and hamonic. Stop trading them |

Go get Markstrom if the Canucks are dumb enough to lose their MVP because Demko had a few good playoff games (Vegas couldn't score on Dallas either)
Spend a little more $$ and don't give up any assets for a top goalie |
