Billy G has now traded for two injury prone centers. While he fleeced JR with that Bjugstad trade I can’t say I think he’s doing a bang up job.

He’s pretty much doing the exact things JR would do.

Overpay on extending current players.

Trade just for the (frank) of it.

The only saving grace for JR is if the Staal family has a grudge against JR and/or the Pens and Eric refused to be traded here. If this is not the case and JR didn't pursue Staal, then he should be fired immediately.

I would have traded McCann straight up for Staal and McCann >> Johansson. I would have traded Jarry for Staal straight up (provided we had someone above average like Andersen lined up).

This is the worst trade I can remember in the recent past. Given what Guerin just did, JR truly sucks at trading.

Talk about limping in to fill the roster, but yeah, I agree. Great trade for BUF, weird trade for MIN, but I agree with RW; how did he let this slip through? I feel like a Bjug for Staal trade could have been possible based on this.

If my memory serves, Eric had included several contending teams and the teams most likely to try to acquire him on his NTC in an attempt to avoid being traded at all.

Can't imagine he expected Buffalo to be interested.

Ok, that makes sense. I guess this is the gamble you make in trying to avoid being traded. I wonder if Guerin approached Staal before he made this trade and asked him if he wanted to revise his NTC. Surely this wasn't such a great deal for MIN that Guerin would risk losing out on anything.

Just watch, BUF will trade Staal to the Pens for a package WAY better than Johansson (and probably all of the Pens remaining assets).

On a side note, why is Staal's helmet / faceshield the strangest looking in the league? I have been trying to figure this out for years. Is it the shape of his head? Does his visor stick out more than normal? What the hell is going on here??

I'll be damned. If I had three wishes, one would be for GMs to keep precise and thorough notes during their tenures and then release them to the public at some point after they leave. I would love to know what went on here.

I bet MIN could have gotten a 1st(+?) from a playoff team not on Staal's list at the TDL. A 2nd ++ at bare minimum. Johansson, if he can stay healthy, is worth about a 3rd at best. Maybe a 2nd in an overpayment.

The only explanation here is that JR did not want Eric Staal in favor of some free agent target. I CANNOT wait to see what chucklehead the old man brings in this year and for what crazy price.

LOL, Minnesota makes a horrible trade and every team is going to wonder why their GM didn't make that deal for their mediocre center.

I get the whole POV that this is terrible for MIN. But from the pens standpoint, I'd be concerned about Staal falling off a cliff at 36 yrs old.

Is Bjugstad the new number 1 center for MIN? Lmao

I mean guys waive their NTCs. If Billy G goes to Staal and says in working on a trade with Buffalo, I can send you to Pittsburgh instead, what happens? I’m not ruling out that someone would rather go to the Sabers but I guess anything is possible, but seems unlikely that if Guerin was so deadset in moving Staal that he was willing to lose a trade to the Sabres that Rutherford couldn’t have gotten him.

He probably says no. And who's to say Guerin didn't like the return from Buffalo more?

I dunno man. He'll be available at the deadline again anyway.
