Loser hockey aka team defense.

Teams must play the game the way YOU see fit right?

Its not about what I think, its about the evidence. Name me one successful team that has played like the Coyotes or Islanders in recent memory?

teams can punch above their weight class if they can play the right kind of defensive system (it's how Columbus beat Tampa last year)

Boston and LA won their cups playing a high pressure defensive system, they just had enough talent to make it work against top tier opposition

Vigneault came just short of two cup wins playing that kind of system, and it's got the Flyers back in the 2nd round for the first time in 8 years

Well the Los Angeles Kings instantly come to mind.

What’s more, didn’t the Islanders statistically (and visually) dominate the Capitals 5v5 in round one?

"...you assume you can't win in a fair game, and collapse to your goalie, try to keep shots to the outside and never have the puck."

A "fair game"?! You can emphasize offense or defense and it's fair either way. Ever hear of football, soccer, chess, war, etc.? Collapsing to your goalie, King, Moscow, etc., has been going on forever.

Not sure who you are to tell a guy how to spend his money. He layed off workers. Thats part of life. Sucks but oh well. Doing what any good businessman does; trims the fat that is not needed.

You know I love your hockey analysis, and I DO completely understand your sentiment that business often forgets that employee numbers actually are HUMANS and that decisions like these have major effects on real people.

With that said, I think automatically leaping to Meruelo being a greedy billionaire on his yacht while he sends people to the homeless shelter is a misunderstanding of how business works. First, because someone is a labeled a billionaire, doesn’t mean that they have cash sitting around to cover these kinds of things. It could be tied to the value of his companies, for example. So in order to pay all these wages for the coyotes, he’d have to sell the coyotes (as a simple example). Second, even if he does have the money, he is having to face where....of all the needy situations that require his money, should he place it. That choice gets made based on scarcity of the assets and opportunities, and unfortunately some of these positions may not possess the scarcity required to prioritize investment. In the flip, l side, that also likely means that these individuals will have an abundance of jobs and opportunities to make the same amount of money. Thirdly, there are always other underlying factors, like maybe it was a poor performing group anyways, and this serves to redistribute and rebuild the budget. Fourth, at the end of the day, it is his money for him to decide how he will build a winning culture and devoted fan base. He isn’t dumb enough to ostracize everyone to pinch some pennies, so let it all play out and see how he reallocated these funds to build the Coyotes back up!

They won in the clutch and grab era, and it was the optimal way to play then. I don't think it is now.

A team can do it for a while, till the goalie falls out. The Bruins and LA were defensive teams in general, but they didn't play boring clutch and grab dump and chase hockey that was next to unwatchable. I am not advocating that teams don't pay attention to defense, I'm just trying to say that in today's game letting your opponent have the puck as much as they want while trying to limit chances to the outside hasn't worked for more than a round or two.

I get that low-talent teams have to still try and contend, but hockey is such a low scoring game anyway that there is a ton of value in trying to score.

Rick Tocchet was a joke calling out his team nearly after every loss, if not every loss- I didn't see every postgame. It looked like shifting the blame from himself to the players. It looked small. It looked like a guy without answers. It looked pathetic. Sure, he may be right.. but that's not the approach to take multiple times. Good riddance.

Just keep moving the goal posts. It's the only thing you are consistent at. Other people have named teams that have done it and you just glossed right over that.

I just come here for the laughs, but I feel bad for you coyotes fans that gotta constantly read this garbage

As a Kings season ticket holder since 1999, I would have to disagree. That's exactly how they played. Even during the Kings dominant years, they played a boring system that was painful to watch on most occasions. It led to success, so we dealt with it and even learned to celebrate it. When Stevens took over and tried to hybrid in some speed and defensive activations, things quickly fell apart.

Sutter hockey relied on waiting for your opponent to make a mistake, then capitalizing on that mistake. Most other teams in the league (including some of the best ones) weren't disciplined enough to play perfect hockey for 60 minutes, so the Kings were able to wait them out. There's a reason why the 3rd period was their best period in goal differential by far.

The Kings were a DOMINANT possession team in their prime. They were in no way playing like the Coyotes or Islanders who almost never have the puck. Yes they played a different style than the Penguins, but they were not playing like the Islanders or Coyotes currently play.

Heelllooo McFly.....the employees got unemployment AND Covid $$. They were all taking in about 1200$ a week these past few months. More then they were making. The owner should give them more $$ on top of that? I guess since he drives a Ferrari all of his employees should be able to as well

LA was one of the most boring "good teams" that I've ever seen play hockey in the post-lockout era. All they did was cycle the puck relentlessly and wear you down, they weren't a team who beat you off the rush. They also mastered the art of defensive positioning, bordering on interference, even without the puck, it was hard to find space in the offensive zone because you'd always have a LA King player leaning you away from the net.

Because the entire team played defense and they always got the puck back. You can't discount an entire facet of playing hockey because it's not exciting or doesn't show up on a score sheet.

I know it was just an example, but lamenting Dylan Strome is silly. I'll give you that he is a very smart player, and knows how to set up teammates. He is horrendous everywhere else. He is far too slow, takes about an hour to make a turn and gets handled every time that he tries to win a puck. He is a liability defensively, which is why his coaches have a hard time trusting him and giving him extra minutes.

Boring is subjective. I was specifically talking about the boring dump and chase, clog the middle , clog the neutral zone, collapse around the goalie, don't play offense style. This is what I am complaining about. It being boring isn't even my main complaint - my main complaint is that it doesn't work. Its a bad strategy.

If the Kings were boring, they were boring in a different way. You mention the cycle, and that's what I remember about them. They would get the puck in the Ozone and just cycle the other team until they were worn out. ITs why they often led the league in Corsi, something that Coyotes, Islanders etc. are not doing at all.

If that's how some teams play, then it's on their opponent to beat their "system". NHL teams don't get rewarded the Cup because they are the most entertaining team.
